Getting a job in your dream industry can be a problem especially when you have no experience. Picture this, you are searching for a job and you come across your ideal role. The only problem is you have zero relevant experience.

This can be the case for many job seekers, but how are you supposed to get relevant experience if you cannot even get the opportunity to do so? Here’s what you can do.

Showcase your great attitude

Many employers look for people with a ‘can do attitude’. Especially in roles that are entry- level. The main reason why they look for this skill is that a great attitude cannot be thought but skills can. Find ways to highlight how your attitude has helped you in previous roles, has it helped you get a promotion for example? Include personal examples also it’s all about willingness, so make sure to really showcase it.

Use transferable skills

More than often hiring managers care more about the skills you can bring to do a role, rather than the fact that you have actually done the job before. If you have transferable skills from previous roles make sure that you use them. Even if you are looking for a complete career change, previously acquired skills can be easily transferred to apply for roles you are currently seeking.

The important thing to note here is that instead of just listing your skills use them in examples. Don’t just say you have great leadership skills, instead, you could say ‘Excellent leadership skills, demonstrated when I successfully managed a small team of individuals on a two-day hike for a charity event’. Other skills that can be transferable include:

  • Leadership
  • Motivation
  • Time management
  • Prioritisation
  • Delegation
  • Communication
  • Analytics
  • Research

Be prepared

Many hiring managers now conduct interviews over the phone or by video. So be prepared, practice your pitch make sure that you have clear career objectives. Make sure that you speak clearly and have energy and passion whilst doing so. This can easily be done with the help of a friend or family member.
