Many studies show that the happier employees produce better work. Unfortunately, not enough CEOs or startup founders care enough about these studies to make employee satisfaction a value in their businesses.

One of the reasons for this is that happiness is very hard to gauge. Employee surveys only tell us so much, team bonding events take up time, and many people are too scared to tell their boss that they’re not happy.

So as a leader, it can be very challenging to build an environment that optimizes happiness in your office. To help you tackle this feat, I’ve created a few tips that you can use to increase your team’s happiness levels. These pointers won’t solve all your problems, but they will get an amazing start to perfect harmony. Remember that happy employees equal a successful business.

1. Weekly Check Ins

There are so many things that cause us to become depressed during the week. A family member might get sick, we get in a car crash, or our family pet passes away. Regardless of the issue, most of us face something or the other during the workweek that causes us to get sad for a little while.

Fortunately, there are tons of small things we can do to fix our moods. As the leader, you should start by implementing weekly check ins. These checks ins are quick 15 minute meetings where everyone goes around the room and says one thing they are happy about and upset about in regards to work. Then they do the same thing but instead of work they talk about their personal lives.

They can go into as much detail as they want, but the point is to get you as the leader aware of happiness levels and any obstacles you can help with to increase happiness.

2. Provide Healthy Snacks In The Office

Diets are one of the largest markets in our society today. As humans, a diet is also one of the hardest things to keep up with. With that said, research shows that the more we take care of our bodies the happier we are.

Because of this, if you have the means to do so you need to provide healthy snacks in your office. “Brain food” will make your employees happier, healthier, and more productive. Make sure your snacks are nutritious and you take in mind everyone’s dietary restrictions. Once you get the system in place, you’ll notice satisfactions levels soar.

3. Make everyone feel safe

Above all else, people want to feel safe at work. Our ancestors survived by forming tribes that would protect its members against predators and nature. While it has been a while since the caveman, our instincts have remained the same.

To be happy, our employees need to feel safe. Don’t ever try to motivate your team through fear, and make sure you are accepting when mistakes happen. If your company is a tribe, you are the tribal leader. Take care of your tribe members, and they will do the rest.
