In other cases, a move may be necessary due to family situations or a spouse being transferred. While many companies do look for local applicants, they also realize that people are willing to relocate for the right position and may be a strong fit for the company. The key is to get your resume noticed, and addressing the issue of relocation can support your chances of landing an interview.

  • Mention relocation in your summary of qualifications. After you have highlighted your core strengths and abilities showing how you align with the position and what you bring to the table, include a sentence about relocation. You could say something to the effect of, “In the process of relocating to the Dallas area,” “Relocating to Boston in November,” or “Open to relocating to the Southwest.” You want employers to see that you are serious about making the move, or already in the process, and that is why you are applying.
  • Address relocation in your cover letter. Because your cover letter is a more flexible document, this can be a great place to discuss your plans for relocation. You can mention any ties you have to the area, why it is ideal for your next job, or more specifics about when you will be moving or can be in the area for interviews. In your closing, you can address how you are open to relocating and why the job opportunity would be a great fit.
  • Don’t lie about your address. It can be tempting to put a friend’s address on your resume or list your city as where you would like to live rather than where you currently live in order to get your foot in the door. However, this can quickly backfire if an employer calls about an interview and you are not in the area or unable to get there quickly, or have to explain why you wouldn’t be able to start immediately. Also, your job history can give away your location especially if you are still currently employed in a different city. It is safer to be honest than risk raising red flags and get caught in a lie.
  • Show your value and that you are worth taking a chance on. Ensure that your resume packs a punch and showcases your most valuable strengths and accomplishments. Show why you are a great fit for the role and worth taking a chance on even though you will have to relocate. If you are serious about moving, be willing to incur relocation expenses on your own and don’t count on your future employer to pick up the costs.
