It’s been said that we spend the majority of our time not with family, but with coworkers. Out of 168 hours in a week, over half of them are spent between sleeping and working (assuming a 40 hour work week and 8 hours of sleep each night).

The time that is left, 72 hours, is for any other activities we pursue. Assuming 2.5 to 3 hours each day are for eating and hygiene, 54 are left for family and everything else.

That means you really do spend a large portion of your time at work. If you hate your job, those 40 hours can really drag each week.

But maybe that doesn’t sound like you. What if you don’t actually hate your job? Perhaps you simply aren’t sure if you are in the right line of work.

You Love What You Do

One of the first, and obvious, signs you’re in the right line of work is that you love it. If you’re excited to get to work each day, you’re probably doing exactly what you should be.

You Are Good at Your Job

When you are good at your job it’s another indication that it’s a good fit. If you have the knowledge and skills to do your job, you’re on the right track.

The Work is Challenging

Even if you’re good at your job you still want some challenge in it so you don’t get bored. If your job gives you enough challenges to hold your interest, why look elsewhere?

There is Room for Growth

Having room to grow and develop greater skills influences whether or not you stay in a job or business. Climbing the ladder to a higher position often means learning more about your job and company.

You Are a Valued Part of the Team

To know if you are in the right line of work, pay attention to how you’re treated. Do your coworkers and boss value you as part of the team? If they do, and you feel accepted, you’re in a good position.

You Respect Your Boss

It’s really hard to work for someone you don’t respect. If your boss has earned yours, you’re a long way toward being in the right job.

The Income is Good

Generally speaking, most people work for a paycheck or insurance. Therefore, if those benefits are good, it’s an indicator you are in the right line of work.

You Support the Business

Working for a business you don’t fully support is difficult. For instance, if they are conducting business in an unethical way, it’s time to move on.

You Are Not Embarrassed by Your Job

Almost nothing is more uncomfortable than being asked what you do for a living if you’re embarrassed by it. If you can’t tell others what you do without blushing, maybe you should make money another way.

Special Assignments Come Your Way

Sometimes there are work assignments that can only be done by certain employees with the right skills. If you keep getting such assignments it could mean you’re being groomed for a management position. This is a way to know you are successful in your job.
