Steve-Adams-FusebillWe asked Steve Adams, CEO of Fusebill, a few questions about his company and view of the markets they serve.

GetApp: Who are you and what is your role in the company?

I’m Steve Adams CEO at Fusebill an automated billing and payments platform for subscription based companies. I’ve been leading high-tech and software companies for a little over 20 years, most recently as VP and General Manager with j2 Global, which acquired Ottawa-based Protus, a company I helped propel into one of the fastest growing companies in Canada, and where I met and worked with many of the people on the Fusebill team.

GetApp: Can you briefly present your management team?

Along with myself there are three other members of the Fusebill management team; Tyler Eyamie, Cofounder and VP Sales and Operations, Greg Burwell, Cofounder and VP Technology, Cathy Smith, CA, VP Finance and CFO.

Tyler, Greg, Cathy, and I worked together at Protus – maker of MyFax, Campaigner, and my1voice. After Protus was acquired, Greg and Tyler started Fusebill largely drawing from the expertise they had used at their previous jobs, and bringing many of the old team back together. As a team we have years of expertise in managing subscription businesses and recurring billing challenges.

GetApp: Are you a Cloud or a Software-as-a-Service company?

Yes, Fusebill is a SaaS company.

GetApp: How do you use and promote usage of Cloud Computing?

Fusebill outsources the billing for many cloud computing and software-as-a-service companies. These offerings are usually based on a subscription model with the actual price determined by a recurring fee plus usage or volume charges. We simplify billing so our customers can focus on their core business offerings.

GetApp: What are the points of difference of your solutions?

While there are many, I would say there are four main differences.
The first would be that myself and the rest of the Fusebill executive team started Fusebill because we saw a gap in the marketplace. Our goal was to provide mid-market firms with an affordable piece of vital corporate infrastructure — a billing system that manages the end-to-end subscription lifecycle. There are competitors that provide great solutions for enterprise companies, but Fusebill is really the only automated billing and payments platform that makes similar capabilities accessible to a wider range of businesses.

Going hand in hand with this is that unlike many of our competitors, we don’t charge our customers a percentage of their revenues. Philosophically, we think it’s wrong –- just because you put your price up doesn’t mean your billing system should cost more! It’s not more expensive for us to put more zeroes on an invoice, so why should you pay more if your revenues increase? Instead, our pricing consists of two straightforward components: a monthly platform fee, and a fixed transaction fee which decreases with volume.

We’ve also designed Fusebill to offer a complete billing and subscriber management system that meets a broad range for needs: implementing pricing and discounting schemes, from simple to complex; managing the subscriber lifecycle from inception until cancellation; charging credit cards or sending invoices. This breadth of functionality addresses our clients’ needs as they grow and is something that I think really sets us apart.

Finally, we also take our relationship with our customers very seriously and we pride ourselves on providing an unequaled level of friendly support and service.

GetApp: How would you like to be evaluated by a prospect?

We find that many prospects start with a fairly narrow view of what they need because they are focused on a particular pain point, and are pleasantly surprised as they learn more about our platform. We like to work with our prospects to understand all of their needs – and help anticipate future challenges.

We also like to work directly with our clients to show them how Fusebill meets their needs. For example, we’ll often use a live account to implement their pricing plans.

GetApp: Why do your customers buy from you?

I think there are lots of different reasons why our customers choose us. The service is a big one – Fusebill manages the end-to-end customer lifecycle – and our clients like the breadth of functionality available to them at a reasonable price. Our expertise in subscription billing is a reason I hear from customers a lot, this comes from years of building and extending large scale billing systems for SaaS companies. As I mentioned earlier, the founding team of Fusebill worked together previously and has a 10 year history of building & running large scale billing systems with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. We’ve lived the pain of billing outages & architected Fusebill to avoid them.

And I would say our team is another, people really like the Fusebill team and not just because we’re available 24/7 but because we genuinely care about the success of our clients, and they can see that.

GetApp: Can you mention some of your key clients?

Our clients range from B2B to B2C across many industry sectors, a few that I would say are key are Silanis, e-signlive, Conceptshare, and Nuvio.

GetApp: What do you see as the key trend emerging in the industry?

Business models are increasingly based on selling ongoing subscriptions to customers, not just completing one-off transactions and recurring billing and payments are at the foundation of these new business models. Over the next few years, I believe these will expand to help manage the customer lifecycle: selling new products and add-ons, renewals and upgrades and targeted offers based on individual customer characteristics. An increased use of analytics will help businesses better understand their businesses and their customers so they can extend the customer lifetime and value.

GetApp: What is THE most important message you feel you should get across to someone considering buying your solutions?

Choose a billing partner that can meet your needs – and the needs of your customers – as your grow.

GetApp: Thank you for your time, Steve!
