I always knew that Snapchat was big, but I never realized how big they actually were. Just to show you the sheer size of this platform, let’s look at some of the data:

  • Snapchat has 150 million people using the service each day (Twitter has about 140 million)
  • Snapchat ads are seen anywhere between 500,000 to a million times per day.
  • Snapchat gets over 10 billion videos views per day (Facebook has 8 billion)

In this post, I want to explain exactly how you can use Snapchat to recruit employees.

Important: Snapchat isn’t necessarily for everyone, there’s no need to make yourself a Snapchat account just because all the cool kids are doing it.

  2. Ask yourself if you have the time/resource to manage something like that. Find a younger employee in the company and let them be in charge
  3. Ask yourself if you’re ready to be authentic. The key to Snapchat is being real

Tips To Use Snapchat To Recruit

Snapchat is easy, fun, light, and all the cool kids are using it. It also has some of the best engagement metrics of any social network out there. You can use this to your advantage by understanding that candidates are likely to actually watch your message.

Here are a few tips you can use to recruit on Snapchat.

  1. Be Transparent

    One thing that’s important for you to understand about Snapchat is that it’s much more raw than the other social networks.

    Companies can spend hours carefully editing and crafting the perfect tweet or Facebook post, but with Snapchat it’s much more open.

    You can use Snapchat to give candidates an inside look at your company and the employees behind it. At the end of the day, candidates want to see what their day to day is going to really be like.

    Snapchat lets you easily do this.

  2. Use Geofilters

    One of the coolest features of Snapchat is how precise they let you target filters on photos.

    This is a paid feature, but this can help you find the candidates you want by going where they are.

    For example, if you are trying to recruit college students, you can target a specific college based on its location.

    Geofilters let you create an overlay that users can view and put on top of their snaps.

  3. Poach Talent From Competitors

    While poaching is generally discouraged, let’s just admit that we all do it.

    Using the same idea as mentioned above (geofilters), you can target people that work at companies where you’d love to find employees (like your biggest competitors).

    Candidates are likely to respond to this because it’s so creative, and so targeted. If your messaging is smart, you’re almost guaranteed to get a response.

    Have fun, be silly, and don’t be so concerned with crafting the perfect message. They don’t last forever so you can enjoy a bit.

    Plus, recruiting on Snapchat is a relatively new concept, so there’s still lots of opportunity to experiment, get creative, and try new things.

    Don’t be afraid to fail, just have fun with it.

Advantages Of Being On Snapchat

Like I mentioned earlier, Snapchat might not be for everyone, but if you can, I’d really recommend getting on it if your target market is on there.

There are two advantages that I can think of for why you should be recruiting on Snapchat, besides finding creative talent.

  1. Helps With Employer Branding

    If you give people an unfiltered look inside your company, it can pay massive dividends in terms of your employer branding.

    If you can get creative and do something that attracts the attention of young people in your target area, you’ll have a huge boost in your branding.

    This can also help you attract passive candidates, one of the hardest but most important things for recruiters to do.

  2. Shows You Use The Latest And Greatest Tech

    The best and brightest employees want to work with companies that use (or at least aren’t afraid to try) the latest and greatest technologies.

    Using Snapchat to recruit will show candidates that you’re willing to use new technologies, which will help you attract the best talent.

There are a few cool examples of companies using Snapchat to recruit and seeing success.

  1. Sober Lane Bar And Grill

    When they were opening a new restaurant in Dublin, they wanted to find a creative way to find staff with a young/creative attitude, so they turned to Snapchat.

    They made Snapchat the only way to submit a job application.

  2. DDB Oslo

    Ad agency DDB Oslo created a student contest called “The Snapchat Pitch” where candidates were encouraged to submit something creative to the agency via Snapchat and DDB would fly the winner to Oslo for an interview.

  3. Goldman Sachs

    I would never have expected a company like Goldman Sachs to use Snapchat, but they’ve used it to recruit college students.

    If a company like Goldman is using Snapchat to recruit, then you know they’re trying to find the best, most creative talent out there.

  4. Taco Bell

    Taco Bell used Snapchat to hire interns for their social media department.

    What I love about the Taco Bell example is that they said the reason why they used Snapchat was because they wanted to find people that were already “obsessed with the brand”.

    What better way to find someone obsessed with your brand than one of your Snapchat followers!

  5. Likeable Media

    Brian Murray, Talent & Culture Director at Likeable Media wrote a great article on Linkedin about his experience using Snapchat to recruit.

    Every candidate that applied to the company got an email that said:

    “Thank you for your interest in Likeable. We will check out your information and be in touch with any questions! You can always tweet me: @BTMurr. Even better… SNAPCHAT me why you belong here (I MAY screenshot): BTMurr”

    They’ve received hundreds of snaps and have connected with some of the most creative talent out there.
