Earlier this month, Hyrell’s Director of Marketing posted a great article about Growth Hacking your Hiring Process. For those of you who don’t know, “Growth Hacking” is a popular marketing approach which focuses on finding low-cost and innovative alternatives to traditional techniques.

As a small business owner, we know that you are a big fan of finding low-cost and innovative alternatives to help run your business. Plus, you know that any small advantage can lead to major results if you are able to utilize it properly. So start thinking like a marketer and “growth hack” your approach to social recruiting on Twitter.

With just a few basic tips and tricks, you can take your social recruiting skills to the next level and start finding more applicants! Here are 5 strategies to get you started:

Shorten Links to Save Space

As you well know, 140 characters is not a lot of space, which means that every single character counts! To save space, and make your tweets look clean and professional, use a link shortening service such as Plus, if you sign up for a free account, you can take advantage of’s link tracking features, which will give basic stats on how many people are clicking on your link and where this traffic is coming from.

Spice Up Your Language

On average, there are about 6,000 tweets posted on Twitter per second. So how do you break through all that noise? Make your tweets more interesting and tweet more often! Don’t just say “We’re Hiring – Apply Here.” Spice up your language and incorporate some of your company culture. Include key phrases from your company mission statement, list the type of employee you want to find, or simply try to sound more conversational.

The Power of the #Hashtag

Once you’ve cut through the noise, it’s time to amplify your voice. Use relevant hashtags to make your message easy to find on twitter. Before you tweet, use Twitter’s search feature to find the most popular job search hashtags (such as: #jobs, #JobListing, or #JobOpening) so that job seekers can easily find your open positions. You can also use location hashtags that are either city specific (#AtlantaJobs) or state specific (#GAjobs) to target job seekers in certain geographical areas.

Reach Out for Retweets

Posting a job opening to your company’s twitter account is only the beginning. The best way make noise is to ask your friends, family, and (most importantly) coworkers and employees to retweet your message for more exposure. Think of retweeting as an instant multiplier effect – every retweet opens up your job posting to a whole new network of followers. With just a few clicks from your family, friends and colleagues, you can easily increase exposure and drive more traffic to your job listing.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

One final way to add a splash of color to your social recruiting is to attach a team photo to your tweets. Pictures are a great way to stand out and show off a little of your company culture. You can also add text to the image using everyday office programs such as PowerPoint or Paint to further highlight your hiring message.
