It’s a familiar scenario – you’re tasked with advertising for a new vacancy for your client or brand, you start to search for available advertising platforms and job boards… and then you just get a bit lost. I mean, there are just so many options available – so where do you even start?

Well, I’ve covered how to choose the right job board for your vacancy before – and I even covered how to negotiate the best deals with job boards last month – so today I thought I’d take a different approach and look at how you can tell if a jobs board is not the right fit for your vacancy.

Regardless of whether you’re recruiting for a digital vacancy or a role in accounting, plumbing or sales, there are a number of tell-tale signs to look out which suggest the job board isn’t the one you should commit to. Here are our top five things to watch out for:

job boards1. Poor Social Media Following

Now, when it comes to job boards, a large social media following isn’t the be-all-and-end-all – but it does count for a lot. Think about it; if the board has a big following across numerous platforms, it suggests they have something worth sharing that people want to hear about and they’re a recognisable brand. It also suggests they’re doing something right on social media – so chances are, they’ll be doing something right with their job adverts too. Definitely something to consider… Also, don’t forget to check when their social media profiles were last updated eg. when they last sent a tweet. If they haven’t tweeted or shared anything on Facebook in six months, it’s highly unlikely your vacancy is going to promoted on social media…

2. Poor User Experience

When it comes to job boards, user experience counts for a lot. Put simply, there are lots of job boards out there so a job seeker has to be able to quickly find what they’re looking for in terms of vacancies and apply – or they’ll just look elsewhere. Put yourself in a job seeker’s position and do a few quick searches on the job board to see what vacancies it returns and how closely they match your search criteria. If you can’t navigate the site quickly and effectively or work out how to search for jobs and apply, chances are it’s not the right job board for you or your ad.

3. Poor Communication

When you purchase a job advert, 9 times out of 10, you don’t just purchase it straight out – you start some kind of conversation with the job board beforehand to see what they offer and how they might be able to help. If you email or call in with a query and the job board fails to get back to you within 24 hours or so, it’s not a good sign. Which leads me nicely on to my next point…

4. Unwilling To Negotiate

When you start a conversation with a jobs board, unless you’ve got an unlimited budget, you’re going to want to negotiate the best package and price for your ad. Now, great, established job boards are used to this – and they should be more than willing to enter into negotiations with you to try and find a package that suits both parties because they genuinely want your business. On the other hand, job boards that are less client-centric won’t want to budge at all – and won’t be interested in negotiating at all because they’re stuck-fast in their ways. With these boards, it’s not that they don’t want your business – they do – it’s just that they’re stubborn and are quite happy to lose your business if you aren’t willing to splash the cash.

5. Unwilling To Give Advice

As I said in point four, great job boards are happy to start conversations with potential clients about the different advertising packages available and the best possible solution. That said, boards like this will be happy to offer advice about your vacancy and the job ad itself and will be happy to make suggestions regarding things like the job title to try and ensure your ad gets the best possible response. If you call a jobs board and they aren’t willing to offer advice or tweak one of their existing advertising package to make it fit your requirements (eg. they’re just generally unflexible and unhelpful), chances are they’re not going to put time and effort into making sure your ad performs effectively… so take note!
