Now that Thanksgiving is over and I’ve eaten till my stomach is going to burst I had the unfortunate realization that vacation was over and I would have to get back to exercising and eating healthy. Everyone knows that the holiday season is one of the hardest times to stick with your diet and exercise routine, but there are ways you can stay healthy while still enjoying all the holidays have to offer.

 1. Don’t completely throw your eating habits out the window

As most people do (myself included) when you’re on vacation, you eat whatever you want no matter how unhealthy it may be. By eating the unhealthy foods, you begin to crave them again, which makes it harder to return to your normal eating habits.  Instead, allow yourself a day or two where you can eat whatever you want but stick to your normal eating through out the week as much as possible.

 2. Find activities to do that get everyone moving

With the weather getting colder, it much more enjoyable to stay inside, sit by the fire, and of course, eat. But even with the colder weather there are still activities that you can participate in that get everyone moving. Try going to an outdoor Christmas lights show or go ice skating, these both have you staying active while getting into the holiday spirit

3. Keep a log of your eating and exercise

There are many ways to track your diet and exercise, but I’ve found that one of the easiest ways to do it is by having an app on your phone. If you have a smart phone there are tons of free apps that track calories and exercise. Before eating, enter the food you’re planning on having into the app; it’s easier to say “no” to something once you realize its 1,000 calories

4. Never go more than two days without exercise

This can be one of the hardest tips to follow during the holidays. Seeing family and friends is a main priority and working out is the last thing on your mind, but if you can’t follow any other tip, follow this one! By making sure you don’t miss a work out after two days, you’re keeping it in your routine. Also, if you work out in the morning, you’re more likely to stick with your diet through out the day.

These are just some tips to help you stay healthy and fit during the holiday season, what are some ways that you stay healthy during the holidays? Even if you do get off your diet and exercise routine, remember that in the end the holidays are for having fun and enjoying time with your loved ones!
