Getting back into the groove of working out regularly or even embarking on a workout routine for the first time can be exceptionally intimidating. You may be wondering what kind of exercises to do, whether or not you should join a gym, what accessories you need, etc. While you will certainly have to make many decisions about your exercise routine, the process of settling into your new lifestyle isn’t as challenging as you may think. Below are four of the tips that I give my clients to help them make physical activity a part of their daily lives.
- Start slowly. This doesn’t mean to take it too easy, but it is important not to overdo it when trying out a new exercise. Give your body a chance to get used to unfamiliar movements and then continually push yourself to achieve small goals during each session.
- Speaking of goals, make them! If you have an overarching goal of losing 20 pounds, don’t focus on that, as it takes time to lose that amount of weight and you will get discouraged. Instead, create fitness-related goals for each week. For instance, you might work to add five additional pushups to your routine, or strive to shave a few seconds off of your time when running a mile.
- Make sure you have the equipment you need to make your workout a success. Accessories aren’t always necessary, but having a great pair of supportive, properly fitting shoes is a must. Additionally, comfortable workout clothes that support the body without restricting your range of motion are essential.
- Stay motivated. Even after just one workout it can be easy to find your drive to stay active slipping. Surround yourself with the people and things that keep you passionate about your healthier lifestyle. For example, create a Pinterest board full of motivational pictures and quotes, or workout with a friend so that you can support one another.
These four tips will help you to ease into your workout regimen and quickly get yourself up to speed. After two or three sessions you should be able to confidently and comfortably complete your workout routine!
