What is Live Sports Betting?

Traditionally, wagers needed to be placed before an event kicked off, regardless of the sport. This is absolutely still a viable and popular option. Nowadays though, you can also place wagers on an event once the action is underway. 

The main advantage of this is that it allows you to capitalize on opportunities and odds that simply wouldn’t have been available pre-game. Let’s say Manchester City are playing Burnley, for example, and are massive 1/4 favorites to win. If Burnley go 1-0 up after 50 minutes, those odds are going to drop massively, even though there will still be plenty of time for the better team (in this case, Man City) to win. 

The other main advantage is that you have superior information than you do pre-match, and continually gain more as the event continues. You can see if a particular player or team is playing well or badly, gauge if weather conditions are affecting play, and so on, none of which is obviously possible beforehand. 

There are also disadvantages, however. One is that you need to make faster decisions, which will therefore be more prone to mistakes. The other main one is that there will be fewer bet types available in-play. 

How to Place a Live Bet

Live Odds and Live Betting Online Explained

The odds for live markets are fascinating. While pre-match prices do certainly change, after they’re initially set, the changes are much faster and bigger for live odds. 

Odds for the markets that are available live will be set at a certain price before kick-off. As the event progresses, however, the odds will change continuously. This will reflect all manner of things. The most obvious, which will always be a factor, is time: the less time remaining, the lower the chances – in general – that something will happen. The most dramatic swings, however, result from what’s actually happening during a game. If a basketball team was winning 80-72, for example, and the other team suddenly goes up 85-80, then the odds for the first team winning will drop significantly. 

It is important, however, that you realize that odds won’t update ‘instantly’ depending on what’s happening. If you’re watching that basketball game on TV, for example, you may find that it takes a little while for the prices to catch up with the points swing. This often results in you trying to get an in-play bet down, only to be told your odds are no longer available, and that – if you still want the market – you must take different odds instead. 

Fixed Odds vs. Live Betting

With regular, pre-match, fixed odds, sheer probability is certainly a massive factor in how the prices are calculated. There are other big factors too though, such as the amount of action a market is getting, and how that bookie’s competitors have priced the same market. 

With in-play odds, however, the values change. Bookies will base their prices far less on competitors’ prices, for example, since those prices will also be changing constantly. Instead, probability – based on the state of the match, and the time remaining – largely takes over. 

You should note that – in general – prices will be better for a market pre-game versus in-play. That’s because you’re taking a bigger gamble, since – as the game actually begins and progresses – you’ll have significantly more information available to you.
