oldPew Research has released its 2014 survey results for Social Media usage.  The survey found that 81% of Americans use the internet.

They found that even though Facebook had the slowest growth from 2013 to 2014, it remains the most popular Social Media site with 71% of adults using Facebook.  The survey also found that more older adults are using Facebook, a whopping 56% age 65 and older are Facebook users.

Facebook also continues to have very active users.  The study found that the engagement of Facebook users continues to grow while the other platforms show little change.  65% of users frequently or sometimes Share, Post or Comment on Facebook.

70% of Facebook users engage with the site daily and 45% do so several times a day.  Compared to 36% of Twitter users visiting Twitter daily and 17% of Pinterest users engaging on Pinterest daily.

There has been little change in the demographics of the online adults using Facebook.  66% of men and 77% of women (up from 76%) use Facebook.

Facebook users by income level show that 72% earn over $75,000 a year while 77% earn less than $30,000 a year.

Some of their other findings include:

  • 81% of all American adults ages 18 and older use the internet.
  • 56% of the adult population uses Facebook.
  • The average number of Friends a Facebook user has is 155.
  • 52% of online adults use more than one Social Media site.
  • 91% of Twitter users also use Facebook.
  • 94% of Instagram users also use Facebook.
  • 29% of Facebook users also use Twitter.
  • 34% of Facebook users also use Instagram.

When you look at the numbers you can clearly see that Facebook is here to stay.  Internet users are still actively using the site. Based on the demographics and usage, Facebook is a marketing and advertising tool that every business, no matter how small, should be using.
