If you read our previous post on why you need a Facebook vanity URL, you must be convinced that you really need one. Our checklist also walked you through some Dos and Don’ts for getting the vanity or custom URL. Of course, if you are just about to create a new business or fan page on Facebook, you may not need this step, since the page creation wizard automatically gives you the custom URL now, based on the name you chose for your page. But if you created your page a while ago, your fan page URL probably looks something like this – www.facebook.com/pages/XYZ/12345678911111. Imagine reeling this off your tongue every time someone asks you for it. Not an easy task, let me assure you!
I debated writing this post because the subject matter here seems a bit outdated, but after coming across several long, awkward URLs in the last couple of weeks, I decided to go ahead and write this anyway. Hopefully, it will be helpful to someone who has not had the chance to set this right yet. The steps are actually quite simple, and all you need to do is follow along. But hold on a moment – have you given a good thought to What name you want for your page?
Here are the steps to get your custom or vanity URL for your Facebook page –
1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/username
You need to be logged in as a person to access this page. As mentioned in our earlier post, you will need to be an Admin for the page that you want to get a custom URL for.
2) Choose the page that you want to get a Custom URL for in the Page Name dropdown. An empty textbox will appear next to it.
3) Add the name that you have decided for your page, and click on ‘Check Availability’. If the name is available, you will get a message saying so. If not, Facebook might give you alternate suggestions. If your first choice is taken, try different names and check if they are available.
(The image shows this particular message because we already have a custom name for our page)
4) Username Available window
If the name you chose is available, you will get a success message, along with a warning. The warning will caution you against inappropriate usage, or deliberately using someone else’s trademarks etc.
5) Once you are sure that you are not violating any of the warnings, you can click ‘Confirm’.
6) Your custom or vanity URL is now set to http://www.facebook.com/XYZ, or any name you chose.
For example, our Facebook page URL is http://www.facebook.com/rightmixtechnologiesllp, and you are welcome to give us a ‘Like’ so that you continue having access to all our great helpful content.
I am sure you will agree that this is a huge improvement on the rather lengthy default URL (www.facebook.com/pages/XYZ/12345678911111). You can easily follow through the above steps and have an up to date custom URL in just a few minutes. So what are you waiting for?
I hope this post was helpful to you. Please share this with anyone who still has the old URL and would like something that is easier to remember.
