Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 BUMP. For anyone who’s been on the internet long enough, or who has dug deep enough, the word BUMP paints a clear picture a three month old unanswered question on a forum, a national news story not getting enough attention, an annoying 14 year old who can’t figure out why no one is responding. Bump (retconned as Bring Up My Thread) is a staple of the message boards of yesteryear. The old message boards used to sort their topics by the time of their most recent post. If you had a post that was getting buried in a mire of other topics, you could respond with this magical word to let the community know this post needed to be seen. Then Social media sites came into being and a new magic word rose to power: Algorithm. Algorithms did away with the clumsy world of bumping, instead focusing on an array of different variables and constants, weighed and weighted to show the right story at the right time to the right people. Never again would the content we see be in the hands of a few bumpers. Or so it seemed until Facebook started giving their clients a look at what makes Facebook so great. In the article Lars Backstorm introduces readers to a new Facebook function: Bumping. Where once the News Algorithm gave precidence only to stories which the user hadn’t before seen, it is now smart enough to go back and resurface stories that are still generating a lof of buzz in the forms of likes and comments. What’s this mean for you? This gives further weight to the idea that, in social, quality is more important than quantity. The older algorithm gave precedence to posts which simply hadn’t been seen before, while the new algorithm gives precedence to posts that have been seen and are still generating conversation. Capitalize on this new function by addressing your audience directly. Ask for opinions on hot topics, and stir up debate around heated issues. Tag people in your posts and try to drag as many folks into the conversation as possible. This new announcement means engagement is as important as ever, and it’s where you should focus your efforts.
