Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 Today we saw the launch of Airtime. Airtime is an app that runs through Facebook and allows users to chat with other individuals by comparing interests. It has been described as an “intelligent Chat-roulette”. After about two years of work, Airtime saw its launch to the public. Being an avid fan of the social media industry, I tested out the new experience. Though some have reported positive feedback, mine was mostly negative. I immediately saw a list of my Facebook friends on the right side. I thought this was aimed at meeting new people! Why would it show me people I already know? After skipping through people (and being skipped myself) I found myself “airtiming” with a colleague of mine to discuss her experience with the new app. Unsurprisingly, her experience was slightly different. More people were trying to interact with her. I would say that being a pretty female helped her results. Although she did have more interactions, they didn’t seem to be in the nature that the app intends. Even though you now have a few things to talk about because you are able to see common interests, there was still a creepy element of talking to a complete stranger about a random topic. I’m sure there are also success stories out there where people had great conversations about whatever topic, but will this be a new way to create a lasting relationship? My answer would be no. Though there is still plenty of time to work out just how exactly this app is going to be used. There hopes that the authenticity of signing in with your Facebook profile and other safety features that eliminate inappropriate content will lead to a platform for video ads and product links.
