We asked Joseph Fung, CEO of TribeHR, a few questions about his company and his view of the markets they serve.

GETAPP: Who are you and what is your role in the company?

FUNG: My name is Joseph Fung, I am the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of TribeHR

GETAPP: Can you briefly present your management team ?

FUNG: Joseph Fung – Co-CEO (@josephfung) – Co-Founded Lewis Media Inc., a software development firm, Simple Machines Forum, an open source software development project, and OnMyBlock.ca Ltd., an online permission based marketing company. He is a graduate of Leadership Waterloo Region, and his professional interests include user business and NFP governance, interface design, web strategy, software development, and all things high-tech.

Jesse Rodgers – Co-CEO (@jrodgers) – Past President of the University of Waterloo Staff Association where he worked to bring positive changes to way the staff and the administration interact and lead changes to key policies that broke down barriers staff felt were there for resolving disagreements. Lessons learned from his experience has helped shape a vision for TribeHR – enable the simple things managers can do to help staff enjoy and grow in their work place. Jesse brings extensive experience in designing and developing web applications at the University of Waterloo. He is also an experienced manager, BarCampWaterloo and StartupCampWaterloo organizer, and involved with VeloCity at the University of Waterloo.

Stephen Heron – CMO (@stephenheron) – With marketing and business experience in many industries ranging from high-tech to automotive to small-business services, Stephen’s keen insights help keep TribeHR in tune with customer expectations and needs. He founded Heron Communications, a respected marketing communications firm in Waterloo Region, and most recently has led the marketing activities of the Schlueter Automotive Group. Stephen joined TribeHR to lead our customer-facing initiatives and marketing.

GETAPP: Are you a cloud or a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company?

FUNG: We’re both. We’re “Cloud” in that you use the software outside beyond your company’s firewall, and your interface is the browser. We’re SaaS in that we take care of all the implementation, integration and rapid deployment of the solution. You can setup your free trial, upgrade, downgrade, and cancel all without needing any technical help or intervention by your customer service rep.

GETAPP: How do you use and promote usage of cloud computing?

FUNG: Cloud Computing is integral the underlying structure of our application. We use it to deliver services to our clients, and we use it to deliver services to ourselves. We have a very robust integration map that outlines how our services (both customer-facing and internal) integrate with various Cloud and SaaS services to keep our business running.

GETAPP: What are the points of difference of your solutions?

FUNG:
1. We foster *true* employee engagement. We do way more than simply including an “employee self-service module” like many of our competitors do – we make it social. Employees can post kudos and notes on each others profiles, they can check in on each others goals and build ties throughout the organization. They actually develop a sense of ownership in their own HR experience.

2. We believe in building software that people *love* using. That user experience extends all the way from the graphics in our app, to it’s underlying architecture, to our customer support. It’s not just about getting data in and getting reports out – it’s about building a system that’s a joy to use.

3. We’re cost effective. Rather than building out a monolithic solution with huge implementation costs, our customers can deploy in a matter of minutes. Similarly, rather than subscribing to a dozen different services, each focusing on a single feature, our customers can get up and running with a full-fledged HR system almost instantly.

GETAPP: How would you like to be evaluated by a prospect?

FUNG: They should ask themselves the following two questions:
a) Do they care about saving them and their employees time?
b) Do they care about keeping their employees engaged?
c) Do they have between 2 and 200 employees? If they answered yes to the above – then we’d be a great fit.

GETAPP: Why do your customers buy from you?

FUNG: hey answered yes to the questions above ;) They also believe in our vision for a new way to do HR. In so many ways, the current best practices for small business HR sucks – Excel and filing cabinets just don’t cut it anymore. People should and do expect more from their systems. We’re building what SMB HR should be – easy, friendly, robust. And our customers love it.

GETAPP: Can you mention some of your key customers

FUNG: Our clients are thought leaders in their industries, and champions of great workplaces. They include: Ants Eye View Miovision Technologies Enflick The Accelerator Centre

GETAPP: What do you see as the key trend emerging in the industry?

FUNG: Employees are demanding more from their employers: they want useful and usable tools, and they want to feel values and involved in their management. HR Software vendors need to realize that the old model of using Finance and HR as the keepers of information just isn’t going to cut it anymore.

GETAPP: What is THE most important message you feel you should get across to someone considering buying your solutions?
