Joining us today for our Expert Interview series is Kaila Strong. Kaila is the Director of Client Strategy at Vertical Measures.
Vertical Measures is located in Phoenix and is a search, social and content marketing agency. She works with her team of Internet Marketing Strategists to execute client campaigns aimed at improving search engine visibility. Kaila has been a speaker at SMX, AMA and local organizations around the Phoenix area as well.
7 Questions on Social Media With Kaila Strong
1. How did you get your start in the industry?
I’ve been working at the same agency for over five years and had the opportunity to work alongside Arnie Kuenn and others in the industry to get my start. Having had very little experience previously, I learned everything I know today about internet marketing here at Vertical Measures. I came from the real estate and mortgage industry looking for a great opportunity to improve my marketing skills. With a mixture of luck and timing what I stumbled across was a new agency with the flexibility allowing me to grow into my career in a blossoming industry.
2. What is the biggest challenge facing your industry?
As someone who focuses mainly on link building and content marketing today I feel that staying on top of industry trends is the most challenging. Not necessarily because everything changes so quickly but because outdated tactics and the basic fundamentals of SEO are often cast aside. As search engines continue to tweak their algorithms to get rid of the unnatural and spammy tactics that many have used for SEO it becomes obvious that we have to stick to what we know works best. Translating this to clients and educating them to trust that a natural strategy is the best one is key. When data is growingly unavailable (not provided & encrypted search) it makes it harder to stay on top of industry trends. We strive to work with what we have and make the best decisions for our clients in the most natural way we know how.
3. What is the method to your blogging success? What inspires your blogs?
Write about what you know. If you’re an expert in a certain niche then write about it. Do your research and answer questions that are important to your audience. Write the content that others are looking for and that seems to work quite well. I use inspiration from all the area where I consume information. My friends on social media inspire me when they tweet or share a funny article. Watching the news and my week-day dose of The Today Show seems to provide me with a tidbit or two I can then write about. Being aware of all the information around me helps inspire my blogs and create successful posts.
4. What do you think is the future of social media?
Simplification and organization. Right now there are just too many platforms to keep track of your social audience, not enough tools to help you simply and organize. I think the future of social media involves better platforms to keep you connected as well as organized and eventually the decrease in the sheer volume of sites.
5. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out?
Get involved in the local community, attend as many free events as you can and read, read, read! The great thing about our community is how open everyone is to sharing information. Never before have I had access to so much information that helps teach me how to do my job better and more effectively. Never have I had so many other professionals willing to share how they create success for their clients. Read, listen and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

7. What do you think is the most important takeaway from your session?
That you can diversify the types of links you obtain by thinking outside the box. Using social media to help with building your community, leveraging your content, building relationships and uncovering link building opportunities is something many brands still aren’t doing today.
