Movies are a great for a variety of things, most of the time we watch them just for entertainment but they are also a great medium for learning. Now I’m not suggesting you base your education solely watching movies, that would be absurd. However I am suggesting that there are many lessons that can be learned from the silver screen. In this article I am going to list the top 11 movies of entrepreneurs. These are movies that will provide a lesson, motivation or even a good heartfelt laugh for the risk takers among us.
What was my criteria for this list of movies for entrepreneurs? To be honest with you it is just based on personal experience. Having started several companies myself I’d like to think I have an understanding of what constitutes a good movie for entrepreneurs.
Top 11 Movies for Entrepreneurs
11. Moneyball (2011)
A great movie for entrepreneurs as it will engage a viewer as it talks about taking a risk using new and untested technology within a competitive environment. A movie that anyone can enjoy, not just risk takers.
10. Jerry Maguire (1996)
You had me at ‘show me the money’. This movie completes me.
9. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Another movie that everyone in the house will enjoy. This is a great movie about sales, hard work, determination and eventual triumph. The message, don’t let your pride stand in the way of supporting your family.
8. Wall Street (1987)
Anyone that has ever started a business will have watched this move. A classic and a favorite.
7. The Aviator (2004)
The Aviator is a great movie with fantastic acting! Leonardo DiCaprio gives a great portrayal of Howard Hughes both as a competitive genius and as a tortured soul struggling with mental health issues.
6. Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)
A great movie outlining the rises of Microsoft and Apple. It also delves into the battles these two companies had and some of the underhanded practices they each engaged in. A great watch for the inner geek in you.
5. Office Space (1999)
Watching this movie seems especially therapeutic after dealing with the corporate shenanigans one can experience at work. Yeah, I’m going to need you to come in on Saturday..
4. The Social Network (2010)
The acting was great with snappy dialogue and the characters well portrayed. You could almost feel the tension around the lawsuit would turn and the movie provided a good degree of the drama centered around a betrayed friendship. Obligatory comic relief provided by the Winklevoss twins.
3. Rocky (1976)
This movie is prefect for entrepreneurs not because of the story within the movie but because of the story of the movie. One of the most successful independent movies of all time, the story of the making of Rocky is worth reading.
2. Blow (2001)
This film presses all the right buttons, and is the semi-accurate true-life story of George Jung. I say semi-accurate as it has been Hollywoodified a little. The movie is a search for the American Dream, a dream that forever remains elusive.
1. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)
I think I would place this movie at number one on just about any list, not just a list of movies for entrepreneurs. Gripping dialogue, loaded with quotes and an Alec Baldwin before he fell through the cracks (and then made his comeback.
