Sony Pictures plans on expanding the Spider-Man universe with an animated movie in 2018.
Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman revealed at 2015 CinemaCon that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are spearheading writing and production. The animated movie will be an independent project. The animated movie will not interfere with inclusion of Spider-Man in the Marvel cinematic universe nor have direct relation to the newly rebooted Spider-Man movie set for release in the summer of 2017.

Lord and Miller served as collaborating writers and directors for animated hits Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Lego Movie. The duo also directed the live action comedy 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street.
The most popular version to date of an animated Spider-Man came in the form of the 1990’s television kids cartoon on the FOX network. That animated series ran from 1994 to 1998.
Sony Pictures announced a pending release date of July 20, 2018 for the upcoming animated Spider-Man movie.
