Shark Tank: Hater Dating App Accepts $200,000 Offer from Mark Cuban

First into the tank is Brendan Alper of Hater, seeking $200,000 for five percent equity.

Hater offers a new kind of online dating experience. The app, which went viral earlier this year, connects people based on what they hate. According to their website, “Hater is making serious online dating more approachable by replacing cumbersome surveys and bios with a fun, alternative way to express your personality.” The app is available for free in the App Store.

The sharks think it’s an interesting idea. Since Valentine’s Day, they have accumulated more than half a million users. New York City is their number one location. They have no sales to date, but hope to utilize the app’s demographics and data for consumer behavior insights in the future.

Guest shark Rohan Oza worries about spreading the app too thin and goes out. Barbara Corcoran loves the name and offers $250,000 for five percent, which she says must be accepted right away. Lori Greiner then jumps in and offers $200,000 for 10 percent with a promise to create a whole brand around the app. Corcoran then goes out since he did not immediately accept her initial offer.

Mark Cuban makes an offer as well, coming in at $200,000 for seven-and-a-half percent and two-and-a-half percent in advisory shares. Cuban likes the idea of using celebrity influencers, in addition to the gaming aspect. Robert Herjavec likes the PR angle and offers $250,000 for 15 percent with Corcoran for a total investment of $500,000. Ultimately, Alper accepts Cuban’s offer.

Each week on “Shark Tank,” budding entrepreneurs have the opportunity to pitch their emerging businesses to multi-millionaire and billionaire investors, known as sharks: Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks; Daymond John, fashion mogul and founder of FUBU; Kevin O’Leary, self-proclaimed Mr. Wonderful and founder of O’Leary Financial Group; Barbara Corcoran, real estate maven; Lori Greiner, queen of QVC; and Robert Herjavec, technology guru and founder/CEO of the Herjavec Group.

Philanthropist and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, Spanx founder Sara Blakely, Skinnygirl Cocktails founder and Real Housewife Bethenny Frankel, Vitamin Water founder Rohan Oza and former MLB player Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez are also slated to appear as guest sharks this season.

“Shark Tank,” which is based on “Dragons’ Den,” is produced by Mark Burnett and first debuted in 2009. To date, the sharks have invested more than $100 million in various companies after engaging in numerous bidding wars and shark fights. A new episode airs each Sunday at 9 p.m. on ABC.

    The authors had written
    “…. mismatches in personality are a frequently mentioned cause for relationship break-up.     The present study’s results, as well as the results found in previous studies (e.g., Eastwick & Finkel, 2008), may be used to educate people, especially singles, about what really matters in long-term relationships, for instance, similarity in personality, instead of complementarity.”

  • I think it’s deplorable. Especially at this time in our history we do not need to glorify or feed hate any more than it already is. Nobody seems to be addressing the fact that this provides an opportunity for bias, bigotry and racism. Just disgusting!
