Scarlett Johansson is confirmed to be starring in the upcoming Sony TV series Custom of the Country. The show is based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s 1913 novel of the same name

The TV show is being adapted for the small screen by British screenwriter Christopher Hampton

In her first major TV role, Scarlett Johansson will play the role of socialite Undine Spragg. The period piece chronicles her characters “ruthless [and] unscrupulous” rise to New York’s high society.

The TV series isn’t a long-running series, but rather an eight-episode mini-series. According to Deadline.com, the series is “about to hit the marketplace,” with interest being eyed by cable channel providers.

Johansson gave birth to daughter Rose Dorothy in early September, and was spotted on Wednesday in New York City. It was her first public appearance since giving birth.

Before her baby arrived Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon joked that he wasn’t going to have Scarlett Johansson, “spend the whole movie carrying groceries.” Instead the movie features three different stunt doubles who handled all stunts for the actress.

Johansson will kick off a global tour for the new Avengers flick in 2015. But first she will sneak in filming for the TV show.

With her baby in tow it looks like Johansson isn’t wasting any time when it comes to diving back into her career.
