The 83rd Annual Academy Awards are officially upon us as Oscar nominees and Hollywood’s finest make their way down the red carpet at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. As always, the event kicks off with the traditional Red Carpet Fashion Critique. What are some of the styles and trends we’re seeing so far? Bright colors popping, feminine colors, often with a hint of a ballet inspiration, classic blacks and whites, and metallics.

Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johannson, Sandra Bullock, and host Anne Hathaway were among the stars who arrived in red this evening. The Black Swan‘s Natalie Portman walked down the carpet in purple. Then there were the color pops that we saw in celebs such as Jennifer Hudson and A Winter Bone’s Jennifer Lawrence, both wearing bright, popping colors.

Feminine, Flowing, Ballet-Inspired
Inspired by the ballet fashions in Black Swan or not, many of the stars hit the carpet in soft, feminine colors and cuts. Mila Kunis, Florence Welch, Hailee Steinfeld, Halle Berry, and Cate Blanchett all arrived in lavenders and ballet pinks.

Blacks & Whites
Stars like Helena Bonham Carter of The King’s Speech and Busy Philipps arrived in classic black, while Virginia Madsen and Reese Witherspoon were seen wearing black and white together.

Country Strong‘s Gwyneth Paltrow was a hit in her metallic silver Calvin Klein dress. Other actresses to don metallics include Hillary Swank, Michelle Williams, and Celine Dion.

The Social Network‘s Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake arrived with special accessories: their mothers, who came as their dates.
