The infamous Sony hack delivers again. The hack uncovered a series of emails between Nintendo and Sony which revealed that they’re in the middle of negotiations for a new, animated, Super Mario Bros movie. Kotaku reported that:
“I am the proud father of mario the animated film [sic],” producer Avi Arad told Sony studio chief Amy Pascal in an email dated Oct. 23, 2014, with the subject line “Mario.” Arad then forwarded Pascal separate images of him with Mario Bros.creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata, the latter of which included the message, “Happy ceo, lets get together, it’s the mother load. [sic]”
It’s about time we got an animated Mario movie! Of course, there was a live-action adaptation released in 1993 that everyone has tried to forget. The movie was so bad that Nintendo hasn’t released film right since then.
An animated film has the potential to be amazing! I mean if something as obscure as The Lego Movie can come out of nowhere and be incredible, beloved characters like Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Toad, and Bowser should certainly be able to be a part of something great.
The Mario franchise has spawned over 200 games, and several series’ within the main Mario franchise, including Mario Kart, Mario Party, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf. The Mario brand is valued at over $10 billion dollars, and with over 400 million copies sold, is the best selling video game franchise of all time.
At least, with an animated film, we can avoid another Bowser looking like this:
