Reports are buzzing that Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer both have plans to leave the Today show. Though neither has confirmed, there is strong speculation that there will be a shake up at the popular morning show. This may be good news for competing networks including CBS’s The Early Show and ABC’s Good Morning America.

Vieira is rumored to be considering leaving when her contract is up this fall in order to spend more time with her ailing husband who suffers from multiple sclerosis. Vieira started her position as co-anchor for Today in 2006.

Possible replacements for Vieira are Today’s veteran news desk favorite Ann Curry, Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford from Today’s fourth hour, Elizabeth Hasselbeck from The View or previous Today host and CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric, who has been rumored to announce her departure from the evening newscast.

There is no definite word on why Lauer would be departing from Today except for the fact that his contract is up the end of 2012. At that time Lauer will have been host of the show a testimonial 15 years, starting his post in 1997.

NBC and Today of course never comment on these matters until public statements are made. However, it looks like many of us may be waking up to changing faces.
