Though I can’t say for sure why, I’ve been thinking mostly in song lyrics for the past few days. It was pretty weird when it started, but now it’s just gotten downright bizarre. Out of control, I tell you. Now, instead of my brain doing things like making the jump from Benny Goodman to My Chemical Romance in one easy step (can you figure out what it is?), I woke up today to discover that I’m thinking of everything in the context of… boy bands. So, for this edition of Music Monday, I thought I’d show you the shape of my heart — er — give you some poppy boy bands to enjoy.
NSync – “Bye Bye Bye”
If I had to hazard a guess, this is where it started. I was at my friend’s wedding on Saturday and he did this whole dance at his reception. Pret-ty epic. This video has all the ingredients of epic, itself, by the way: running across the roof of a moving train, a high speed car chase in sporty cars, Justin Timberlake’s curly hair, and marionette puppets. Who could ask for anything more?
Backstreet Boys – “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)”
In high school, I used to playfully hate on the BSB all the time. The truth is that… I loved this song.
Boyz II Men – “Motown Philly”
ABC, BBD. Mmm-hmm.
NKOTB – “Step By Step”
… Yep. Still love it. Not only was I the only 8 year old with a crush on Danny Wood, I think I was the only person anywhere who preferred him over any of the others (especially Joey). I had not one, but TWO Danny Wood Barbie dolls. Someone tell me I’m not alone here. Someone? Anyone?
98º – “The Hardest Thing”
Let it out, let it out. In other news, I just noticed for the first time that Nick Lachey appears to be wearing lipstick. The late 90s were… kind of amazing.
The Jackson 5 – “I Want You Back”
An original boy band classic. And man, are those some weird costumes.
