The two had been friends for decades, having met on the set of Mother Courage, a play that Brooks’ late wife, Ann Bancroft, was doing with Wilder. They began working together and remained friends until Wilder’s death due to complication from Alzheimer’s disease earlier this week.

Brooks told Jimmy Fallon, “He was such a dear friend. I expected that he would go but when it happens, it’s still tremendous. It’s a big shock. I’m still reeling. No more Gene? … He was such a wonderful part of my life.”
