Matthew McConaughey is set to star in Born To Run, an adaptation of the 2009 bestselling book from Christopher McDougall.

The official title of the book is Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, although it is doubtful the film will use that entire thing. The book tells the story of McDougall finding members of the Tarahumara Indian tribe in the Mexican Copper Canyons who are able to run over 100 miles without suffering runners’ injuries. Then, the story traces a race between the best runners in America and members of the tribe.

McConaughey continues to revitalize his career, one that seemed lost in the dreck of poor romantic comedies and light acting. During the 2000s, McConaughey was lost in films like Failure to Launch, Fool’s Gold, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, romantic comedies that were bashed by critics and steadily began failing at the box office. The poor box office and reviews may have been part of what drove McConaughey to reinvent himself, a reinvention culminating in an Oscar for Best Actor for Dallas Buyers Club.

Before appearing in Born To Run, McConaughey will star in another challenging drama, The Sea of Trees. Directed by Gus Van Sant, The Sea Of Trees stars McConaughey as a suicidal man lost in a Japanese forest who befriends another suicidal man (Ken Wantanabe). The two then work together to try and find a way out of the forest.

McConaughey also has a bevy of projects coming up beyond The Sea of Trees, so there is no release date of filming schedule for Born To Run at this point.

While the book was a bestseller, it does appear to be a niche story catering to long-distance runners. However, with Matthew MCConaughey on board with Born To Run, expect the film version to reach larger audiences.
