Jessica Lange has been the star of the American Horror Story television series every year, despite the story changing plots, settings, and the majority of the cast being new each season. In the most recent version, American Horror Story: Freak Show, Lange covers a Lana Del Rey song and blows away the show’s creator.
Ryan Murphy, the AHS creator, teased Jessica Lange’s cover of “Gods and Monsters” earlier in October. Now the version has been uncovered, and was featured in the most recent episode of the series that aired Wednesday, October 22, and the version is tantalizing.
Spin online has seen the version and reviews it, saying “While we’re sure that this cover will be even better in the actual episode with AHS’ signature outlandish visuals accompanying it, Lange certainly does the track justice (as if there were any doubt). The only quibble — a minor one, really — is the censorship of a pivotal F-bomb in the song’s chorus. A clown brutally murdering people on cable television is fine and dandy, but naughty words are just too scary for the American Horror Story audience.”
Entertainment Weekly claimed “Lange’s Elsa Mars went full-on glam for a performance of Lana Del Rey’s “Gods & Monsters.” It was such an epic number that it even attracted freak-show urban myth Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley), a deadly spirit with two faces. Fun times.”
Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars, the leader of a circus freak show where sinister things unfold in every episode. American Horror Story: Freak Show, airs Wednesday nights on FX.
