Earlier this year, in an interview with THR, George RR Martin first mentioned the idea of a Game of Thrones movie:
“It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”
Now, actor Charles Dance, who plays Tywin Lannister, did an interview with The Daily Beast, in which he said: “There’s talk of eventually trying to do a feature film, but I don’t know which of the storylines. There’s so much to cram into a film.”
When Martin was talking about the potential for a feature length film, he brought up the Tale of Dunk and Egg, a series of three prequel stories he wrote. They follow a group of characters who live in Westeros 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones is a show on HBO based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of books. The show became an immediate and massive success, gathering an exceptionally large fan base. The show’s stand out star is said to be Peter Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister, having won both a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe for his role.
Set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, the series follows the violent struggle of the realm’s noble families to control the Iron Throne. The series incorporates magical and fantastical elements, with its inclusion of dragons and White Walkers. Many are saying The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter are what established fantasy as a widely acceptable genre, and Game of Thrones partly owe’s it’s success to these franchises.
Game of Thrones season 5 is set to premiere sometime in 2015.
