“Fifty Shades of Grey” is Fandango’s fastest selling R-rated title in its 15-year history. The film, set to open in theaters Feb 13, has already made $1 million in advance ticket sales. A source said after tickets for the film, based on the erotic trilogy by author E.L. James, went on sale Jan. 11, it tallied $1 million in online sales before end-of-day Tuesday.

Fandango chief correspondent Dave Karger made an announcement.

“Very few books can claim true national phenomenon status—and Fifty Shades ranks with Twilight, The Hunger Games and Gone Girl as novels that entered the zeitgeist from coast to coast. Fans of the book have been waiting for years to see their favorite sexy characters come to life on the big screen, and they are clearly fueling our sensational advance sales.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey” and its fastest selling sales have now outpaced previous top advance ticket titles, including 2010’s “Sex in the City”, 2011’s “The Hangover Part II”, 2013’s “The Hangover Part III” and “Gone Girl.”

The EL James trilogy has sold over 100 million books worldwide. The novels are about a young literary student, Anastasia Steele, who falls in love with Christian Grey, a handsome billionaire who has a kinky side.

The film’s soundtrack boasts artists such as Ellie Goulding, Beyoncé and The Weeknd. Jamie Dornan, who plays Christian Grey, recently told Elle UK that the movie is more of a love story than all sex and bondage.

The 32-year-old actor said, “The love story is more important than the BDSM aspect. I mean, we are going to tell a love story, you know, it can’t just be what happens in the Red Room, that’s not a film. There’s so much more going on than that.”

He added, “I can understand why people say tying a woman up and spanking her is misogynistic. But actually, more men are submissives than women. Very powerful men. It’s a far bigger scene than I imagined: in pretty much any city in the world that you could name, people want to get spanked with a paddle with studs on it.”

No surprise that “Fifty Shades of Grey’s” sales are the most fastest selling so far for Fandango. Looks like they better get ready for a second installment.
