Jan. 8 marks Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday. Though the music icon known as The King has been gone for 38 years, his legacy is being commemorated in more ways than one.
Fans of all ages may be pleased to learn that Elvis’ entire album collection consisting of his tracks from the ‘60s will be made available on iTunes. This covers all the songs recorded between 1960 and 1965 with newly mastered audio.
There’s also more good news; a website called ElvisTheMusic.com has also gone live and is a comprehensive fan site for those who love all things Elvis. Presley’s mansion, Graceland, was also the center of a livestream celebration honoring one of America’s greatest rock figures. Elvis’ wife Priscilla Presley made an appearance.
Legacy Recordings have also partnered with Spotify and also announced plans to release its own official reissue of the man’s greatest hits compilation. The album will be called #Elvis80: The Fan Favorite’s Playlist.
Also going on at the same time as Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday commemoration is a high-profile auction held by Julien’s Auctions. Elvis’ two private planes the Hound Dog II and the Lisa Marie will be placed for bid. There is no word on what the starting bid will be. While the two planes are no longer suitable for operation, they are still in mint condition and remain practically the same as they were when Elvis was still alive.
Elvis Presley was born on Jan. 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi. He began his music aspirations in 1953. His very first studio recordings were of the tracks “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin” and “My Happiness.” He also served a two year stint in the US Army, enlisting in 1958 after getting drafted for service. He was honorably discharged in 1960 with the rank of Sergeant.
Elvis’ health deterioration and death also became as much talked about as his life; The King died in his Graceland mansion while using the restroom. The official cause of death was listed as cardiac arrhythmia, though there are all sorts of conspiracy theories alleging that he was murdered in a cover up. Since his death, thousands have reportedly spotted Elvis out and about, fueling speculation that the man is alive after all.
