Oh, the joys of digital marketing. What’s pulling in killer results one day might turn on a switch and give nothing the next day. Digital marketing is a constant struggle to keep up with trends and swift changes in the market.
If you’re not staying ahead of your competition, your overall strategy may start to fail. Now that we’re almost halfway through 2015, we thought it would be a good moment to review some of the biggest mistakes digital marketers have faced this year.
Putting Your Mobile Plan On The Back Burner
If you’re not keeping up with mobile, you’re losing a big chance. It’s true that mobile devices have overtaken desktop computers as the top way to access the internet. If your marketing strategy isn’t geared towards mobile, you’re overlooking more than half of your target audience. Whether it’s a responsive website or mobile targeting, make sure your plan is current.
Not Paying Attention To The Numbers
One of, if not, the biggest advantage with digital marketing compared to old-school marketing (billboards, commercials, newspapers ads, etc.) is the ability to measure your overall plan. Google offers a great analytics package that allows to see just about everything, from conversion rates to your ROI. It’s going to let you see what is and what isn’t working. If you’re not paying attention to these numbers, or don’t have a package set up at all, you’re working in the dark. Get analytics set up on your digital marketing tools and start learning what all the stats mean.
Social Media Changes
Social media moves at lightning speed, so if you’re using the same plan you used last year, chances are it’s not bringing in the best results. A major change we saw last year was Facebook’s tweaks to its algorithm, which ultimately led to a decrease in organic reach. If you’re still using the old method of posting with no boost or targeting and walking away, you’re not going to reach much of your target audience. You need to find new ways to get your posts in front of your audience, and sticking with an old strategy won’t get it done.
No Plan
Probably the biggest mistake of all is having no plan. It’s kind of vague, but it’s vital to having a successful year with your digital marketing efforts. Your digital plan has many players, and if they’re not working together to achieve the same goal, then it’s a failure from the start. Sit down, map it out and put a purpose to everything you do with your digital marketing plan. If you can avoid the mistakes mentioned above, you should be off to a good start.
