Granath vs. Wright: TrialBegan

The trial between Magnus Granath, better known by his Twitter handle, “Hodlonaut,” and Australian computer scientist Craig Steven Wright (CSW) began on September 12 after the two had been embroiled in legal wrangling since 2019.

Wright has been making the case that he is Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Many people, Hodlonaut included, have been vocally claiming that CSW lied about it. However, CSW said that his reputation had taken a severe hit since Granath had disregarded his claims that he was Satoshi.

Granath vs. Wright is in highlights and began on September 12. The trial is intended to determine how much harm Hodlonaut did to Wright’s reputation.

The Brief History of the Granath and Wright Case

Following CSW’s claim that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, Hodlonaut published a series of tweets with the hashtag #CraigWrightIsAFraud in March 2019.

There are two separate legal battles over the Craig Wright vs. Hodlonaut dispute. Both hodlonaut and Craig Wright have initiated legal actions against each other in different jurisdictions:

  • Hodlonaut in Norway
  • Craig Wright in the United Kingdom for libel

Hodlonaut VS. Craig Wright Trial: Quick Update

The trial began in Norway and was intended to determine how much harm Hodlonaut did to CSW’s reputation. Attorneys for Hodlonaut shared a series of remarks trial’s opening day.

  • The day began with a quick overview of Bitcoin.
  • Next, they presented the evidence they had gathered to show that CSW was dishonest.
  • This evidence included tweets from others calling CSW a fake and from CSW himself that seemed to run counter to Nakamoto’s mindset and the Bitcoin ideology.

Craig Wright & Its History on Cases

Several people have come forward over the years to claim they are Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of the Bitcoin (BTC) protocol and white paper released in 2008 and the Bitcoin network introduced to the public in 2009.

Nakamoto’s identity is still a mystery, even though numerous people have claimed to be him. However, no one has provided evidence that has convinced the Bitcoin community that they are indeed Nakamoto. Craig Wright was one of those people who claimed to be Satoshi Nakamoto.

CSW and Hodlonaut in 2019

In 2019, the CSW and Hodlonaut began their legal battle with one other. At the time, CSW was taking legal action against a number of people who had accused him of lying about being Nakamoto. Hodlonaut was one of these individuals, and CSW sued him, saying Hodlonaut ruined his name in the United Kingdom by discrediting his claims that he was Nakamoto.

However, Hodlonaut scored a minor success when the High Court of Justice ultimately dismissed the case, and Hodlonaut tweeted the verdict with the following message:

UK High Court handed down judgment today in the defamation case CSW filed against me. The Judge ruled UK does not have jurisdiction, and the proceedings against me there to be dismissed. Norway has jurisdiction. We will go to court there to put an end to this mess.

CSW has been asserting in and out of court that he is Nakamoto, initiating several lawsuits against different European bitcoiners. Peter McCormack, owner of the Real Bedford Football Club and host of the podcast “What Bitcoin Did,” has been in a legal dispute with Wright. As of August 1, 2022, the court’s decision was made public.

The UK High Court Judge Martin Chamberlain found that Wright’s reputation was “seriously harmed” by McCormack’s comments. However, Wright “advanced a deliberately false case and put forward deliberately false evidence,” so Wright was only entitled to recover nominal damages of 1 British pound only.

Let’s see how this trial between Hodlonaut and Craig ends. Legal arguments from CSW’s side will resume the next day. Judges don’t care if CSW is Satoshi Nakamoto, but they will need to know who Nakamoto is to determine the extent of the damage.
