Cincinnati Uni Crypto Education

The University of Cincinnati (UC) in Ohio is set to launch two crypto education courses this year as part of its curriculum for students.

They’ll be taught at UC’s Carl H. Lindner College of Business on Woodside Drive, Cincinatti.

Crypto Education

The educational courses will centre around new financial technologies, particularly cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and other digital assets such as DeFi tokens and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

The initiative is being funded by two UC supporters Woodrow Uible and Dan Kautz, who set up a cryptocurrency fund as a gift to UC. Uible is a UC alumnus and Kautz is a local real estate developer. Together in 2019 they created the Kautz-Uible Economics Institute at Lindner College.

Part of the plans include the opening of a ‘cryptoeconomics laboratory’ space in a new ‘Digital Future Building’ on campus by fall 2022, complete with a Bitcoin mining rig.

PhD student Dean Marianne Lewis commented:

‘Thanks to Dan and Woody, our students will gain hands-on, experiential education in this new frontier of financial technology. Our students will learn how to manage cryptocurrencies and how such digital assets impact our economy, positioning UC as the regional leader and among the top universities nationally with this kind of program.’

An article covering the news on states that students will learn about blockchain tech, equity valuation, portfolio management and other ‘knowledge vital to work for digital asset companies’.

It also includes a quote from Uible:

‘Blockchain and the underlying application of cryptocurrency is at the cutting edge of business innovation and management. It is important that UC students be informed and educated about this technology. We feel that students will learn more by participating in the process of trading crypto currencies and directly working with a blockchain. That experience is much more valuable and meaningful than just learning from a textbook.’

University of Cincinnati president Neville G. Pinto added that the new course and lab ‘will open more doors for our students and bring new partnerships across our growing campus.’

The current director of the Kautz-Uible Institute Debashis Pal also commented:

‘A recent LinkedIn report identified Blockchain as the most in-demand hard skill. Students who work with the cryptocurrency fund will develop immediate and relevant knowledge about the fast-growing digital asset industry. Educational programs from the Kautz-Uible Economics Institute will establish the University of Cincinnati as a thought leader in this cutting-edge technology.’

UC also cited similar existing higher education courses for the study of cryptocurrency at Stanford and MIT as inspiring them to add the new course.

Academic Director Michael Jones PhD also added:

‘Blockchain technology is the future of the digital economy. This gift enables UC students and faculty to conduct cryptoeconomic research with corporate partners. Companies like Ledger SAS are supporting the lab in order to publish best practices on how to safely store, transmit, and exchange digital assets.’
