content marketing trends of 2018

Content marketing trends 2018

It’s 2018. Blogging alone isn’t going to cut it anymore. You need to find new and engaging content trends. But first, you need to understand who your target market is, and what type of content they’re interested in.

After all, not everyone wants to read endless, opinionated blog articles. The internet has made many of us super impatient. Whether it’s funny or serious, we want your information right now and in the shortest amount of time. And we want you to reach us on the platforms we’re on. You should come to us. Don’t expect us to come to you.

Please don’t misunderstand me, blogging is still important, and should be a big part of your content strategy. It just shouldn’t be the only part of your strategy.

Take a look at Millennials. In a survey done by Harris Poll, 36% of Millennials said that “visual expressions” like GIFs and emojis, better communicate their feelings and emotions. In other words, young internet users aren’t just reading content; they’re watching videos, looking at funny pictures, testing their knowledge, and much more.

So what are the new and popular content marketing trends of 2018?

1. GIFs

Don’t call it a comeback. GIFs have been here for years. They just disappeared for a bit, while the internet adjusted and re-adjusted.

People don’t want the internet to be so serious. They like keeping it weird. That’s why more and more, you see animated GIFs created and shared on popular platforms like Facebook, Snap, Imgur, and Instagram.

Where can you create GIFs?

There are lots of places to create GIFs. The bigger question is where you can host and share them with your target market.

My favorite place is The above GIF was created by the E channel and is hosted at Giphy. Take a look at their profile page. They created over 1,000 gifs that have been viewed 3 million times.

2. Memes

Sharing funny images, with or without a funny message, is a huge part of online expression. In fact, it’s so huge that many agree that memes influenced the 2016 Presidential election.

Look at this meme created by Seamless food delivery. It racked up 1,000 likes, 700 retweets, and 100’s of comments.

So how can you get in on the MEME game, and grow your online brand?

Start with the endless meme generators for desktop computers and mobile devices.

Here are a few of my favorites:

3. Checklists

Did you know that 60% of B2B marketers say they struggle with producing engaging content the most? Well, creating interactive checklists is one of the easiest and most effective ways to create engaging content.

Use a checklist platform like, to share endless checklists with your branding, that your target market can save, download, and use.

Share interactive checklists of things to do, places to go, books to read, and much more.

Girl’s Guide to Chicago made 61 Checklist templates and had 40,000 views, 2,000 saves, and 4,000 free checklist downloads with her branding on it, just by sharing checklists of things to do in Chicago.

4. Heart Warming Stories

Did you know that heart-warming stories were one of the top types of content shared on Facebook in 2017? People want to feel good, and they want to share those good feelings with their friends and family.

Look at this simple image with a short story at the bottom of Imgur. It’s a heartwarming story about Lebron James and a fan that will bring you to tears.

There’s something in my eye…

It racked up 137,000 views in just a few days.

Whether you’re the Celtics organization, the Cavs front office, or even the NBA, this is the type of content you should be creating and sharing.

5. Quizzes

According to Buzzsumo, two different quizzes were in the top 10 pieces of content shared on Facebook in 2017. Quiz 1: Only 1 in 50 People Can Identify These 16 Grammar Mistakes. Can you? Quiz 2: What state should you move to based on your personality?

Wouldn’t it have been brilliant if the Grammarly app people were behind Quiz 1?

So, what kind of quiz could you make?
Who could you get to share it?

These questions should be flowing through your mind right now!

If anything, I hope you take three main points away from this article. First, blogging is essential, but not the only important thing. Second, reach new and bigger audiences with new types of content, like, gifs, memes, checklists, heart-warming stores, and quizzes. Third, research, research, and do more research on different types of content you can create. The internet is growing and changing every day.

Good luck my friends.
