We know that the web allows for several ways of communicating, but the strongest visual medium continues to provide us with the greatest opportunities for delivering our messages.

Communication 101

In order for communication to be effective, it must involve both the sender and the receiver. And with various methods and styles of communication, we continue to find new ways to deliver our messages, so that they will be noticed and remembered.

If you really want to speak with your visitors and not just to them, then there are many factors that you need to consider as part of your overall online communications strategy.

Get Found
Get Found If you are trying simply to attract visitors to your website your focus should be mainly on search engine optimization or simply, finding ways to help others find you. This purpose stands alone and is very different from the goal of conversation or effective digital dialogue.

The words that you use to help others, including search engines, to find you are very important.

Keeping your audience in mind, you must be able to identify which key words will be used to locate you or your business. These are the words or phrases that are typed into Google or other search windows to locate you or your competitors and you want to come up with a list of keywords and phrases to use for both search and creation of all of your online content.

It is not only important to discover the right words to use for optimizing search engines, but to also know which words can be woven into your content to attract and keep your visitors at your site for more than just a few seconds.

Once you have an online audience, you convince them to stay by cleverly crafting your messages and by using compelling content that is attractive and engaging to keep them on your site and to begin forming a new relationship.

Don’t just say it. Show it!

Words and word groupings, or the way that you organize your pages, using shorter sentences and paragraphs for easy scanning and readability and adding visual elements, such as bullet points, bold font and color can increase your visual page impact and retention greater than 50%.

Along with paying more attention to images, graphics and movies, individuals are ten times more likely to share a video than an article and are much more likely to read a page that includes pictures and drawings for visual story telling.

Be Remembered

What we do know about communication is that using more than one element of delivery, results in longer retention of information, once the message has been received.

After three short hours, information that we hear and see is remembered much longer than information we receive using only one element, such as reading words on the screen. So mode of delivery becomes a crucial consideration, especially online.

Get Connected

Get Connected Digital dialogue is more than just story telling, not to detract from the importance of being able to organize words in order or importance and influence and intrigue. But story telling is one-way communication, primarily focused on delivery. In order to connect with your audience, you need to be able to start and carry on a conversation.

The main difference between story telling and digital dialogue is that the latter involves two-way communication.

Suggesting a call-to-action or asking for a response starts online conversations. This can be as simple as providing a chance to click to share, tweet or distribute to a wider audience or to invite an individual to take part in discussion or conversation by enabling them to comment or ask a question.

Digital dialogue requires clever crafting of messages that elicit a response.

And as we have learned in business that effective communication results in building relationships and that quality relationships result in greater personal and professional success, two-way communication should be our goal for enhancing quality digital dialogue.
