Make time stamps more useful for your audience. Simply adding time stamps in your content isn’t enough. If time stamps aren’t clickable, you may be unintentionally frustrating your users. This is a distinct possibility if your audios, videos, or podcasts tend to be longer than ten or fifteen minutes.

Multimedia content is essential for most businesses and organizations. However, some may benefit more than others, depending on the niche and the target market’s interests, as well as other demographics. Several industry and niche types that benefit the most from using videos, webinars, podcasts, etc., make educating their audiences a top priority.

These types may include:

  • Coaches
  • Teachers
  • Online Marketers
  • Podcasters
  • Course Instructors

Some people don’t see themselves as being a teacher, coach, or educator. But, every time you show your audience how to do something, you are teaching them what they want and need to know.

Regardless of your niche, “how-to” content and “step-by-step” instructions, in video format, are important to convey complex ideas and concepts. This is why so many of your audience members want more interactive options such as webinars, podcasts, and videos. They make learning and understanding easier and faster.

Traditional Time Stamps

Embedding your media files in your blog posts and pages keep your audience watching on your site, which might appear great in terms of traffic retention. However, there are drawbacks.

Huge media files often force your audience to sit through the whole thing because they don’t know what is coming up next. If they have to stop the player, it will reset back to zero, so they have to start all over again or try to figure out where they were.

Smart business owners and marketers create a table of contents, or show notes, for the media file, with a time stamp. This will tell people what to expect, in addition to attracting the search engines. Be sure to use keywords in your show notes as you describe each important topic in the media file.

Timestamping is a good habit, but using traditional time stamps to search and find specific items isn’t efficient or easy. Your audience still has to look at the time stamp and try to move the play arrow to the correct spot. This can be time-consuming, difficult, and inaccurate because the controls are not user-friendly and/or the time stamp isn’t exact.

User-Friendly Clickable Time Stamps

The Link Timestamp WordPress plugin does exactly what it says. Once you create time stamps for all of the content you describe in your show notes, the plugin will hyperlink automatically to those exact spots in the media file. There’s no need for your audience to waste time searching. All they have to do is click on whatever content time stamp they are interested in.

If you want to link manually, you can do that too. For example, the plugin will allow you to link specific keywords in your content to specific time stamps with just a couple of clicks.

Best of all, it works with the most popular embedded content from YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Amazon S3, and more. It also supports a large variety of players such as HTML5 Audio player, HTML5 Video player, Smart Podcast Track Player, and the Blubrry PowerPress Player, just to name a few.

Adding time stamps is a good strategy. However, your content will look more professional and add real, functional value to your audience’s experience when you make time stamps more useful for your audience with clickable time stamps.
