I must admit, I am a huge fan of word clouds.

Beyond being fun to play around with, however, word clouds can reveal useful marketing data.

A word cloud (or tag cloud) is a visual representation of text data, typically used to depict keyword metadata (tags), or to visualize free form text. Among other uses, word clouds are really handy for quickly perceiving the most prominent terms used in website and social media content.¹

To demonstrate, I ran our company’s website copy through Wordle’s word cloud creator tool (there are many websites such as Wordle that offer word cloud creation services free of charge.)

I was happy to relate this finding to my boss, because the results came out almost exactly as they should have.

STAY ON MESSAGE

I’ve been blogging a lot lately about how your company’s website should align with your core business message. In our case, the following words were most frequently used: marketing, technology, website, development, content, social, media, management, software, inbound, mobile, business.

This all makes sense given that we are a marketing technology company that provides business solutions such as website development, content creation, social media management, inbound marketing and software development.

IT’S PANDEMIC

People are using search engines more than ever to research information, educate themselves, and find solutions to their problems. In a post-Panda SEO 2.0 era, organic search is increasingly driven more by relevant content than by inbound links and juiced-up keywords.

Companies that tailor website and blog content to reflect their core business objectives will generate leads online more effectively than those that don’t. Yes, inbound links and well-chosen SEO-friendly keywords are still important factors in search rankings. However, the shift to organic content is gaining momentum, especially as web content further integrates with social media content, and both with search engines (think Google+).

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, a timely word cloud diagnosis of your website copy may well be worth 1,000 leads.
