cut through the clutter

Whether you’re trying to gain more visitors to your super sleek and sexy website, drive qualified leads to your affiliate product or spread the word about your newest eBook, you’re going to deal with clutter. If Internet marketing was difficult in 2000 because of all the noise, it’s infinitely harder today because more people are attempting to do it.

So, how do you get through all that clutter and get your awesome content or product noticed? The simple answer is to reach the people who care, according to marketing guru Seth Godin. But how do you go about doing that?

Building Unique and Quality Content
In order to get the attention of people who care, your content needs to be targeted to a niche group of people and be different than the “average joe” content. Think of unique ways to display your information—like skyscraper content or web graphics.

Skyscraper content is a relatively new concept, but those who are using it are already seeing phenomenal results. Take a look at the New York Time’s Snow Fall story to get an idea of what skyscraper content actually is. This type of long-form content is broken up with graphics, photos, and videos.

Web graphics took off in 2011 when infographics became a popular way of displaying facts and statistics, but they also include interactive graphics and motion graphics. Next time you sit down to brainstorm your new content project, take into consideration how you can make your graphic different.

Getting it to the People
After you create an awesome piece of content, your next challenge is getting people to share it, talk about it and link to it.

To do that, you don’t have to join the crowd shouting at the same time to the entire world. Why would you want to be part of all that chatter? You’ve got to target in on the few people who really care about what you have to say. You don’t have to convince 10,000 people they need what you have, you only have to convince a few.

Once you get those few precious people on board, the rest is simple. If they truly love what you have to say, they’re going to tell everyone they know. They’ll share your links everywhere they can. They’ll talk about why it’s so great. They’ll actively encourage others to find out why for themselves.

They’ll pretty much do all the hard work for you.

Finding The Right People
The best way to find the kind of people you need is to explore other niche blogs and websites in your field. Do a basic Google search or search on Followerwonk for Twitter users who have a blog in your niche.

Next, send a nice email complementing their site, choose an article they wrote that you really like and tell them how much you enjoyed it. Then, offer up your own content link and tell them you thought they might like to include it on their site. If you’re lucky, they’ll accommodate you and the building begins.

What have you got to lose? Try it! There’s no quicker way to cut through all the clutter that is the Internet and reach the people you truly need to be reached. Let us know how it goes.
