Twitter Facebook LinkedIn Flipboard 0 The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith sold only 1,500 copies – until it was revealed that Galbraith was a pseudonym for J.K. Rowling. Sales immediately shot through the roof, with Cuckoo’s Calling toping Amazon’s bestseller list within the next 24 hours. If there’s one lesson that content creators should takeaway from this experiment, it’s that marketing matters. Become a Bestseller No longer is blogging for business enough to ensure that your content marketing efforts succeed. After all, if no one is reading your content, then is it really serving its purpose? So while you should focus on consistently posting content for your business, it’s important to consider how to market that content as well. To successfully market your content: 1. Make it worthy. Give readers a good reason to read your recent post. Is it worthy because of the compelling title? Or are you known for consistently valuable content? Is this particular post by a guest author? Remember, the content for The Cuckoo’s Calling didn’t change, but the revelation that the author was J.K. Rowling suddenly made the content valuable for audiences. Likewise, you must define why your content should be read. 2. Figure out where it belongs. By now, everyone is familiar with J.K. Rowling’s journey of being repeatedly denied by publishers before finally being accepted by Scholastic. Even then, it wasn’t until the Potter books hit the U.S. that the series started taking off internationally. Your content will similarly have a home where it thrives – and it’s your responsibility to figure out where that place is. 3. Grow your audience. As exciting as it is to have a readership, remember to never become complacent. After all, the point of content marketing is to grow your business and ultimately create a few conversions. The larger your audience, the larger your business! What do you do to help your content reach a larger audience? What tips can you share with other readers?
