The beginning of a new year is a perfect time to make plans and predictions for the year ahead. Cloud technologies are one of the most rapidly growing sectors in IT and it draws a lot of attention. I’ve tried to come up with the possible (in my opinion) trends in the clouds that will take place in 2014. Here’s what I’ve got.

Blurred boundaries between cloud technologies and CDN

From the point of view of cloud technologies, network is the last obstacle on the way of common shift to clouds. That’s why network technologies will be subject to improvement and growth, and their efficiency will increase. The main goal of their improvement will be the faster data delivery among cloud servers.

Clouds themselves are distributed system of data storage and delivery. And in case your computing powers are situated in different natural regions then you need to find a solution how to deliver all the necessary information to your employees and clients quickly and continuously. With the development of network technologies distributed cloud will turn into type of CDN and will partially replace it.

Hybrid future of corporate clouds

In 2013 we saw the tendency for public and private cloud services not to compete but rather to beneficially supplement each other. And if in the previous year corporate clients were choosing between private and public, then in 2014 it will be both private and public for them. In other words, there will be a tendency for hybrid infrastructure. Even today Gartner recommends corporate clients to project their internal clouds taking into consideration the fact that very soon the company may need hybrid infrastructure.

Clouds as an attendant service

Many big companies will offer their clients cloud services as an addition to the main product – for example, email client. This tendency can be clearly seen in the portals’ determination to create additional Internet space for a user. Thus, Dropbox has enlarged the amount of free space they provide for the users, while some Chinese services already offer terabytes of cloud space for their users. So cloud technologies become more of a product or a resource which brings some additional value rather than a separate technology.

Specialized cloud technologies

During the previous year, cloud giants proved that their main specialization is to provide calculating powers in the most general sense, without any differentiations. The best example is Amazon – the company provides cloud technologies as a resource and does it well.

But smaller companies will need to differentiate their services if they want to occupy their place at the market. So I think that this year we’ll see specialized cloud services. For example, cloud services for gaming industry with higher demands for the data transfer speed, for banking sector – with demands for better data protection, etc. Thus specialized providers will be able to find their clients who need more specific services.
