With a media environment that is inundated with news of relationships gone wrong — so much so that it’s sometimes worth wondering if any celebrity couples have it figured out at all — many are wondering what keeps some celebrity couples together, even when their marriages have hit rocky patches. (Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom — who struggled with Odom’s alleged infidelity — have most recently hit headlines, for example, as heartbreak seems to have visited Khloe again and again over the course of her career.) Surely, they ask, there must be something that keeps people together even under the blinding glow of the spotlight.

Khloe & Lamar, Rob & Kristen- What Celeb Couples Do to Make it Work

A tonic for this mindset seems to be simple, old-fashioned modesty. In many ways this is because the problems of marriage come down to openness and trust, say many, and knowing what they have at home is better than the temptation to lie or cheat. It was Paul Newman who once said that the secret of his long-term marriage success with his wife Joanne Woodward (to whom he was married for fifty years) was symbolized aptly in the question: “Why go for hamburger when I have steak at home?”

And if you’ve seen recent celebrity couple news stories about pairs of stars who have split due to infidelity — with “Twilight” stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart being among the most high profile of the lot — you’ll probably know the temptation for stars to cheat, when they come to live in what initially seems to be a consequence-free environment, is very much part and parcel of star culture.

Struggle Through

If Khloe and Lamar seem to work as a couple, avoiding the pitfalls of splitting up, it isn’t because they haven’t struggled. Recent allegations of infidelity have surfaced that have made Khloe seem the victim of tragic circumstance. It remains to be seen, however, if she and her husband can overcome this difficult time, as Lamar’s cheating is made visible to the public eye, they should be able to withstand a lot more.

Fame Is Fleeting

Perhaps Khloe’s willingness to forgive and try to heal the situation comes from her recognition that like youth, celebrity is fleeting — and that deeper values such as commitment, openness and honesty are very much not fleeting, but in fact are character traits that will always serve people well. If this is the case, and if Khloe can address her husband’s flaws, there is a chance that what made their marriage work will serve them in the future.

So it is that celebrity culture has a long-line of casualties. Ultimately, what works for celebrities is often what works for everyone else — a sense of humility and gratitude, and a capacity for forgiveness and honesty. If there are lessons to be taken from the stars, it’s that maybe we aren’t so different after all.
