Additionally, another rumor circulated, claiming that Oprah’s friend Gayle King had sued her over these allegations. This too was proven to be unsubstantiated and was flagged as misinformation by multiple fact-checking outlets

Oprah Winfrey’s Early Life

The woman we now famously know as ‘Oprah’ was born Orpah Gail Winfrey on January 29, 1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi to Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey.

No, Orpah is not a typo – she was named after a biblical figure from the book of Ruth.

However, people would often mispronounce her name as Oprah, so the new nickname stuck around.

Oprah’s mother was a teenager when she gave birth to her.

She worked as a housemaid, while Oprah’s father served in the Armed Forces. Vernon Winfrey was in the Army when his daughter was born, followed by several gigs as a barber and city councilman after his return.

Oprah Gail Winfrey rose from poverty.

She was so poor that she had to wear potato sacks instead of a school dress! She spent most of her childhood living with her grandmother. At the age of six, when her grandmother passed, she moved to live with her mother in Milwaukee, in the house where Vernita Lee worked as a maid.

Her mother had a second daughter at this time, named Patricia. Oprah also had a step-brother, Jeffrey, on her father’s side.

Both siblings of the star passed away later in life. Her brother, Jeffrey, died from AIDS in 1989. Her sister Patricia died from cocaine abuse in 2003.

Oprah Winfrey remained in Milwaukee and when she was 12 attended Lincoln High School before moving to Nashville to live with her father. From then on, she would move back and forth between her parents’ homes.

She also switched schools more than once – transferred to Nicolet High School under a special underprivileged youth program, followed by her time at East Nashville High School, where she got her diploma.

Living in Milwaukee was a nightmare for young Oprah Winfrey. Later in life, she would reveal that she was repeatedly raped as a child by her cousin between the age of nine and 12 but for years, she kept this a secret from her family.

Oprah said during the first episode of the Oprah TV show:

At nine and 10 and 11 and 12 years old, I was raped by my 19-year-old cousin. I didn’t know what rape was. I certainly wasn’t aware of the word. I had no idea what sex was, I had no idea where babies came from, and I didn’t even know what was happening to me. And I kept that secret.

Her nightmare didn’t end here, though. She was repeatedly abused, both sexually and physically by more than one relative up until she was 14 years old. At only 14, she got pregnant with a child that died two weeks after birth.

Not only that, but the young girl was frequently beaten up by her family, especially her grandmother.

“‘As a young girl, I was “whupped” regularly. At the time it was an accepted practice of punishment to discipline a child. My grandmother, Hattie Mae, embraced it.” – she wrote in one of her books.

While Oprah Winfrey had an estranged relationship with her mother for a long time, she made amends with her later in life and even supported her financially after she became a successful television star.

Despite her poor upbringing and the sexual abuse she suffered when she lived in Milwaukee, Oprah Winfrey was a star student, which earned her a full scholarship at Tennessee State University, where she studied communication.

She was an exceptional student who won several accolades, was crowned Miss Fire Prevention, and was once invited to a White House Youth conference.

Despite her success in school, she dropped out at the age of 19 to pursue a career in media. However, in 1986, she graduated from the University with a degree in communication and performing arts. She also received honorary doctorate degrees from Duke and Harvard in 2013.

At 17, Oprah participated in and won the “Miss Black Beauty Tennessee Pageant”, which helped her land her first job in the media industry as a part-time news anchor.

Oprah Winfrey Net Worth: Making a Media Queen

Oprah Winfrey is living proof that you can leverage lessons from a challenging life to excel in your passions.

From a poor childhood as Oprah Gail Winfrey to a multi-billionaire career in media, she achieved the unachievable. Let’s learn more about the story behind Oprah Winfrey’s net worth of $2.6 billion.

Oprah Winfrey’s Early Career

When she was only 17 years old, Oprah Winfrey worked part-time at a local radio station and participated in the local pageant.

She then decided to leave college and work on her career in media, quickly landing the role of the first black female news anchor at WLAC-TV Nashville.

Oprah was the youngest anchor in the history of the station and, at 22, she landed a new position at WJZ-TV, the ABC affiliate and Baltimore-based station where she co-anchored the six o’clock news.

This was an exceptional success since the position was coveted among media professionals at the time.

It was 1976 when Oprah started working at WJZ-TV. On screen, she wasn’t as objective as the program required, so they soon ‘demoted’ her to host “People Are Talking” as a local talk show host, which turned out to be a major stepping stone in her career.

From 1977, Oprah appeared on “People Are Talking” and won the hearts of the audience with her casual, friendly style and ability to make any guest comfortable. By the end of the decade, her show had higher ratings than Phil Donahue’s program, the nationally syndicated number-one local show at the time.

According to “The Path Made Clear: Discovering Your Life’s Direction and Purpose”, one of her books, the role as the talk show host of “People Are Talking” played a crucial role in Winfrey’s life.

It was in this role that she discovered she was truly passionate about hosting talk shows.

The successful talk shows helped Winfrey make a deal with King World Productions for her morning talk show – which would later turn into The Oprah Winfrey Show.

The Oprah Winfrey Show

In 1984, WLS-TV offered Oprah Winfrey the role of a morning talk show host on AM Chicago, a 30-minute show produced by King World Productions, the company behind Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

She accepted a four-year deal worth $1 million to host this show.

Within one year, Oprah Winfrey turned this show into a major success and reached the number-one spot in the ratings. In 1986, Roger Ebert, a famous critic, encouraged Winfrey to license the show for a national audience using syndication.

She listened to his advice and after she completed the process, the talk show got its name The Oprah Winfrey Show – but not under the guidance and management of King World Production.

Oprah Winfrey created her own production company to manage her talk show.

The Oprah Winfrey Show debuted in 1986 and aired 4,561 episodes in 25 seasons before it ended on May 25, 2011. Not long after its airing, the show became the highest-rated talk show in the US and one of the most popular shows in the world.

It was precisely this talk show that turned Oprah into one of the biggest names in the media world – not to mention it added a fortune to Oprah Winfrey’s net worth! At its peak, the show earned Winfrey $30 million a year alone.

Oprah Winfrey was only 32 years old when she became the first African-American nationally syndicated TV host. At this point, she also took a role as a supporting actress in the film “The Color Purple” and was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.

Oprah Winfrey’s Syndication Empire

When AM Chicago first aired in 1984, Oprah managed to make it the highest-rated talk show in Chicago within months.

However, months after her $1 million contract began, Oprah spoke to Roger Ebert who recommended that she meet with his agent, Jeffrey Jacobs. Oprah shared her doubts about the contract with him, and he said:

This is a slave contract. Slaves work for a fixed dollar. They’re willing to bank on a national show. This contract is for 4 years, totaling 1 million dollars, an effort to make you a highly-paid slave.

Consequently, Oprah Winfrey fired her former agent and hired Jeffrey Jacobs to help her strike a new deal with King World (ABC). However, King World rejected the offer to renegotiate the deal, prompting Oprah to establish her own production company HARPO Inc. Media, the business that would later become a syndication empire worth billions of dollars.

This was, undoubtedly, one of the worst moves for King World. At the time, Oprah attracted record viewer numbers, so by not giving her a cut of the earnings, they lost the chance to produce her show.

From this point forward, Oprah Winfrey and Jeffrey Jacobs would go on to produce their show through HARPO Productions and HARPO Studios. They paid all the production costs and paid King World a fee to syndicate the show nationally, making the former “boss” of Oprah her paid employee.

Oprah Winfrey owned 90% of the HARPO Productions empire, while Jeffrey Jacobs owned the remaining 10%.

Because of this smart move, Oprah Winfrey became a multimillionaire, followed by her gaining billionaire status in 2003. Oprah and her agent also negotiated a deal with ABC that included a magazine, books, movie productions, and other TV shows.

Each of the shows was filmed at the HARPO campus, which expanded to 3.5 acres at the time.
That’s not all, though. After the tremendous success with her talk show, Oprah Winfrey was also able to negotiate a stake in King World Productions, so she also won money from every show they produced.

When CBS acquired King World in 1999 for $2.5 billion, Oprah owned approximately 1% of CBS. She also owned an unknown stake in Disney through the deal she made with ABC, two major moves that made Oprah Winfrey’s net worth climb from millions to billions.

As of 2021, Oprah Winfrey was the fourth richest celebrity in the world, joining the ranks of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Kanye West.

Other Profitable Talks Show Appearances

Even though Oprah Winfrey is no longer the talk show host of her own show, she has had some highly viewed – and profitable – appearances in recent years.

The most notable appearances that added millions to her estimated net worth are her interviews with Harry and Meghan, and her interview with Adele.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Oprah Winfrey earned between $7 and $9 million for the sit-down interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. CBS paid her based on the advertising revenue expected, and with over 17 million viewers, the interview was a major success.

In 2021, Oprah Winfrey appeared in a special titled Adele: One Night Only, where she interviewed her about her new album. According to The Daily Mail, the interview generated $100 million for Adele, while Oprah Winfrey earned around $7 million.

Oprah Winfrey as an Actress

Impressively, Oprah Winfrey landed a role in a movie while she was still gaining fame. She starred as Sofia in “The Color Purple” in 1985, a Steven Spielberg movie, where she earned $35,000.

Winfrey would later co-produce a Broadway musical version of the movie.

In 2018, Oprah starred in “A Wrinkle in Time”, a movie directed by Ava DuVernay. She initially didn’t plan to star in the movie but eventually took the role of Mrs. Which in the Disney production.

Oprah Winfrey shared about this role:

I felt like we were making the new Wizard of Oz for another generation.

In 1987, Winfrey created the Oprah Winfrey Foundation, an organization that supports “the inspiration, empowerment, and education of women, children, and families around the world”. So far, she has donated over $400 million and given hundreds of scholarships.

Her Angel Network (since 1998) has partnered with other popular philanthropic groups such as the nonprofit by Paul Newman.

To date, the Angel Network has raised over $80 million for various non-profit organizations. Since Oprah pays for the network’s administrative costs in full, all the raised funds are allocated to the selected non-profits.

Through the foundation, Winfrey donated $12 million to help vulnerable communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also raised $11 million for Hurricane Katrina relief and donated another $10 million from her net worth.

In 1991, Winfrey started a campaign to create a national database for child abusers to help victims such as herself. Oprah’s Bill was signed by President Bill Clinton in 1993 and became the centerpiece of the National Child Protection Act.

Oprah Winfrey’s Business Ventures and Investment Portfolio

Since Oprah Winfrey created her own production company and established herself as a popular talk show host, she decided to expand her reach and add a few businesses to her portfolio. Over the years, Oprah Winfrey’s portfolio has grown tremendously and includes plenty of other ventures in addition to her Harpo Productions business empire.

On top of that, she has invested a lot in real estate, has a rich luxury car collection, and even a multimillion-dollar jewelry collection.

Oprah Winfrey’s Business Ventures and Investments

Let’s go through the most profitable businesses in Oprah Winfrey’s portfolio.

Oprah’s Book Club

In 1996, Oprah Winfrey launched a book promotion brand called Oprah’s Book Club. The book discussion club segment on the Oprah Winfrey Show soon became a powerful force in the industry and helped sell millions of copies, bringing the talk show host millions of dollars in return.

The concept was simple – Winfrey would select a new book for viewers to read and she would discuss it with them on her show. During its 15 years, the club recommended a total of 70 books, many of which went on to become bestsellers.

In 2012, Winfrey announced the launch of Oprah’s Book Club 2.0, the new version of the original club, which was a joint project between OWN and O, The Oprah Magazine, both of Oprah Winfrey’s businesses.

In 2019, Oprah announced a revival of the club with Apple Inc., one that aired on Apple TV+.

Oxygen Media

In 1998, Oprah Winfrey co-founded a programming company called Oxygen Media. The entertainment company catered to a female audience online and via the small screens, and the centerpiece of the business was Oxygen Network, an independent cable station.

Oprah Winfrey has a small stake in this company, possibly to this day. She founded the business alongside Geraldine Laybourne, Paul Allen, and other highly successful partners, and they introduced it to the public in 2000 during Super Bowl XXXIV.

Today, the channel operates as a digital television network on subchannels of NBC-owned TV stations.

Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN)

Before the Oprah Winfrey Show came to an end, in 2011, the talk show host decided to create her own network called Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN.

Eventually, the network became a huge success and contributed to most of Oprah’s estimated net worth in 2019, which was reported to be $37 million.

OWN wasn’t an immediate success, though. However, as of February 2015, it was available to over 81 million pay television households, which equals over 70% of all TV-owning households in the US.

The basic cable TV network was a joint venture between Harpo Productions and Warner Bros. Discovery at the beginning, but it is now mostly owned by Discovery. In 2017 and 2020, Discovery increased its stake from 73% to 95%, while Oprah remains a minority stakeholder to this day.

Still, Oprah Winfrey did get something great from the deal. As Discovery boosted its holding in OWN, Oprah Winfrey has a stake of over $35 million in Discovery. Pretty sweet deal, right?

We don’t know what Oprah Winfrey’s exact stake in OWN is today – or how much she’s earned from OWN to date. She remains in her role as the CEO of OWN.

Weight Watchers

Winfrey has been the director of Weight Watchers since 2015 and is contracted to be a spokesperson for them through 2025. Now called WW, the business brought millions to Oprah Winfrey right after she bought stocks in it. She reportedly made $75 million for WW in one day by buying over 10 million shares for a 10% stake. When she bought the stock, it doubled to $13.92 a share, adding $70 million to her already impressive net worth.

O, The Oprah Magazine

In 2000, the television star launched her own magazine, one that amassed significant revenue from newsstand sales and subscriptions in its time.

The regular monthly editions of the magazine ended two decades later, but in only 15 years, O, The Oprah Magazine made a revenue of over $1 billion.

Real Estate

Oprah’s real estate portfolio is truly impressive, boasting over $200 million in the United States alone. Here is a list of some of Oprah Winfrey’s known real estate assets over the years:

  • Chicago residence: Between 1985 and 2015, the primary residence of the star was her Chicago home, which she bought for an unknown amount and sold for $4.6+ million. The property spans 9,625 square feet and has mesmerizing views of the water.
  • Montecito residence: Most likely still under Oprah’s ownership, the Montecito mansion near Santa Barbara is the most impressive property she owns. The mansion is spread across 23,000 square feet, and she bought it for $50 million in 2001. Today, the home is probably worth over $90 million.

  • Colorado estate: In 2014, Winfrey bought a new home in Telluride for $14 million. The property was built by Bob Wall, a tech executive, and is labeled a “smart house”.
