It’s October and fall is in full swing. The leaves are changing, people are apple picking and the choices at the local pub just got a whole lot more flavorful. Seasonal brews are always a big hit and since there are so many to choose from we thought we’d let social media help us decide which beer to order. We’re putting two of our favorite pumpkin flavored beers—Shipyard Pumpkinhead and Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale—head-to-head in this week’s Social Media Face Off to see which beer brand has the most social spice.
In order to compare the brands in social, we set up search streams for each brand in the uberVU platform, including variations in spelling (e.g. “shipyard pumpkin head” and “shipyard pumpkinhead”). We’ve compared the results from the past two weeks to determine our winner.
Let’s see which pumpkin beer has social buzzing.
Round One: Mentions
Round one was pretty close for the two pumpkin beer brands. With 602 mentions, Shipyard Pumpkinhead takes the win, outperforming the 443 mentions of Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale.

Round Two: Sentiment
A valuable metric in social media marketing is sentiment. It’s vital to understand how the social web feels about your brand. So how did the fall beers stack up in sentiment of mentions? Round two is even closer than round one. Both brands have high positivity scores—51% for Shipyard Pumpkinhead and 50% for Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale. Shipyard Pumpkinhead also had a lower percentage of negative mentions—7% compared to Blue Moon Harvest Pumpkin Ale’s 10%—giving it the win.

Round Three: Conversation Mapping
In round three we’ll take a closer look at what exactly is being discussed about each beer brand in social. uberVU’s conversation maps highlight hot topics so you can easily see what people are talking about most in relation to your brand.
Both beer brands have positive conversation maps. “Love” appears in 4% of the mentions of both brands. But it looks like Shipyard Pumpkinhead is getting a little more social love with “enjoy” and “favorite” also appearing on its map.
