Last week Rivers was rushed to a New York City hospital after she stopped breathing and suffered a cardiac arrest. Rivers suffered her attack as she underwent a surgical throat procedure at a clinic. Joan was placed in a medically induced coma, and remained on life support for several days.
Rivers left the ICU on Wednesday, but shortly after her daughter had to decide if she would remain on life support.
Joan Rivers has been a well known name in Hollywood ever since she developed a friendship with Johnny Carson, subbed for his talk show, and then destroyed their friendship after she attempted to host The Late Show with Joan Rivers in 1987. That TV series last only a short period of time, but fully ended her friendship with Carson.
Rivers would go on to have a successful career as a shock and awe comedian, talking about taboo subjects that other female comedians were avoiding during the start of her career. It wasn’t uncommon to hear Rivers joke about abortions, drug addiction, and various other subjects that were often overlooked. In 1987 Joan’s own husband committed suicide, and years later she would make subtle and not-so-subtle jokes about that tragic event.
Joan may best be known for the various plastic surgeries she underwent over the years. At one point she famously joked, “I’ve had so much plastic surgery, when I die they’ll donate my body to Tupperware.”
Here’s a look back at Johnny Carson as he first introduces Joan Rivers to the world.
Joan and her daughter Melissa had a strained relationship for years, but eventually began to reconcile after the pair began to host various programs together.
The comedy world has truly lost a pioneer and her loss is being felt all over social media as her peers and fans continue to offer their best memories from the comedian.

I shouldn't have laughed "@SoLyrical: Joan Rivers died on purpose to be petty. She know this is Beyoncé's birthday."

And of course her Hollywood peers took to the social network to share their condolences:
