One of the most exciting parts of leading a company like Nylas is that I am fortunate enough to be at the forefront of the technology and trends that are facing businesses and consumers both today and tomorrow. With over 1,000 customers and more than 100,000 developers using the Nylas platform, we’re able to not only have a front-row seat the biggest trends in tech, but also work with the developers, leaders, and teams that will usher these trends into reality.

Here are three of the biggest trends that will shape the business and technology landscape in 2022 and beyond:

The API Economy Will Continue its Rapid Growth

In recent years, especially since the pandemic, APIs have become big business. As more and more businesses view APIs as part of their critical business strategy, the API has heated up. 2021 brought on a handful of substantial funding rounds from companies like Kong, MessageBird, Postman, and Nylas, as well as M&A activity from Twilio, Sinch, and more.

Next year will bring on much of the same as companies will continue leaning on APIs as a way to prioritize and quickly build impactful features and experiences for their customers, leverage intelligence to curate modern workflows that save time and increase user productivity, and make it easier for users to do more without needing to switch between numerous tools and interfaces.

Company Culture Becomes a Discussion at the Boardroom Level

Company culture has been pushed to the brink over the last few years. it is now an integral part of not just employees day-to-day routines and experiences, it is a critical component of how organizations run their business. As a result, we’ve seen the importance of company culture steadily become part of discussions and decisions that are made at the highest levels of business.

In 2022, company culture will finally reach the boardroom. Many boards are recognizing and see how company culture can drive value throughout the organization, from hiring and retaining talent, to product decisions, customer service, and much more. With operational and strategic guidance needed around topics and issues related to race, vaccination status, remote work, mental health, and more, heading into 2022, company culture must be a top priority of any company’s boardroom.

AI to Empower, Not Replace Employees

AI has proven to be a powerful tool that can transform businesses and help them to modernize their operations, products, and services. However, there are still many AI doubters who believe that ultimately, AI will replace humans on the front lines of work.

Advancements in AI combined with the labor shortage and demand for rapid scale have forced companies to automate wherever possible. Even with continued AI-led innovation, humans will continue playing an essential role in true organizational impact, analysis, and growth.

Moving forward, as data becomes more accessible, organizations will continue relying on humans more and more to build more complex AI and machine learning models that can analyze more data faster and structure it to impact the entire business, not just specific teams or users.

2022 is going to be a big year and important year. And while technology might not be the answer to all of our problems, it can certainly play a key role in helping us stay connected, accomplish our goals, and live better lives. I’m excited to be a part of an organization that is building this type of technology and am eager to see my team, and countless others leverage what’s next in tech to change the world.
