If you aren’t already offering an incentive to encourage people to sign up to your email list, it’s time to consider it.

Incentives like ebooks and discount codes are also great for giving people a taste of what your brand has to offer. In fact, 51 percent of millennials in the U.S. are willing to share their information with companies in exchange for an incentive – and that’s just one potential audience you can reach.

So what can you offer to your prospective email subscribers?

Monica (M): Hey there, welcome back to another episode of Quick Tips! I’m Monica.

Olivia (O): And I’m Olivia. Today, we’re going to show you an easy way to boost your email list using a tactic known as incentives.

M: Let’s say you’re a blogger who writes about photography tips. You have a signup form, but it isn’t performing as well as you were hoping for.

O: That’s because people are usually cautious about giving away their email address. You need to give people a reason to sign up for your list. That’s where incentives come in.

M: By offering exclusive content to your email lists, you’ll show subscribers that there’s value that goes above and beyond what’s already on your blog. For a photo blogger, this could be anything from an equipment checklist to a video tutorial.

O: Thousands of blogs and retailers have already caught on to the value of incentives. Chances are, you’ve subscribed to an email list in order to receive a coupon code or special offer.

M: And that’s awesome, but you’re probably asking, “What do I have to offer?” The answer is surprisingly easy to find.

O: Are there questions that keep popping up on your blog or social? What analytics keywords drove people to visit your website in the first place? Take a pointer from thousands of other online marketers, and use these topics as starting points for more detailed e-books and PDF guides.

M: Great point. E-books and PDF guides are a win-win. They’re easy to create and convenient for the reader to download.

O: Programs like Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign are great programs for designing PDFs or other white papers. If you’re not so design-saavy, there’s also Canva. It’s a drag and drop editor that’s pretty intuitive and you get access to professional templates and images for a small fee.

M: But like we mentioned, there’s a ton of e-books out there on the web. If you want to try something more unique, why not take a stab at a video course?

O: Before you let the idea scare you away, creating a video is actually easier than you think!

M: Whether you have an iPhone or professional equipment, there are ways to work with what you’ve got.

O: We’ve even outlined our video creation process and tips for getting comfortable on camera in this behind the scenes video of Quick Tips.

M: So now that you’ve got a topic and are ready to make a video course, how do you deliver this to your subscribers?

O: Setting up an autoresponder email series to be delivered when a subscriber opts-in to your list will automatically deliver a message with a link to your content. How awesome is that?

M: If you’re sending a PDF, you can attach the file directly to the email, or host it on a service like Dropbox or Google Drive.

O: And if it’s a video, try linking to an unlisted youtube video so that it’s exclusive to your list, or password protect a video in your Vimeo account and only share the password with your email list.

M: As for cadence, try delivering a valuable teaser in your first email. Then break your course into lessons and send it out over the course of a few weeks. Each email will build anticipation for the next and you’ll develop loyal subscribers who look forward to getting your emails.

O: Once the series is over, start delivering regular newsletters with valuable information and offers that are relevant to what you initially promised.

M: So there you have it! Our tips for boosting your email list subscribers using incentives. Now what?
