I just received confirmation of being featured in Forbes in a week from now. Wow!
Three years ago I did not even think about it.
Last year it was a dream.
TODAY it is a reality…
Here is my story of how I went from never even considering to deliberately working on getting featured in such a HUGE publication.
When I started my online business in 2017, I had little clue what I was doing. All my experience marketing and supporting other (local and e-commerce) businesses behind the scenes was not really applicable to building a Personal Brand and selling consultancy and coaching.
I started making any money in September after three months of being insanely active on Facebook, starting my own interview series and making great connections. But it was not in ant way what I imagined. Money wasn’t being “made in my sleep”, and the income from my online course looked more like a broken tap, mostly being broken.
I also found it challenging to sell a relatively cheap online course ($197) to people who were following me and joined my group. The amount of “convincing” was pretty much the same as if I had to ask them for a $10K investment.
It was quite exhausting, even for a tenacious one like me. I saw people cheering, but not buying. And I couldn’t understand WHY…
My messaging was pretty good. The course was really brilliant, if I may say so myself- it had everything one needed to learn how to be more visible on Facebook, as I shared only proven strategies that worked for my own visibility. It seemed like people were always asking me for my advice, so they trusted I knew what I was talking about… So why were they resisting paying as little as $197?
It all changed DRAMATICALLY when I realised that the reason people hesitated to invest with me was that they did not see me as a “top expert”. They saw me as this friendly girl who understands Facebook. And they would gladly pay 20 times more to someone teaching pretty much the same principles, probably much less generously, but how they perceived as a celebrity in their niche. They saw this person being interviewed in different Facebook groups. They listened to them being featured on podcasts. They saw them featured or contributing to large publications.
THIS is what I was not doing. Even though intuitively I knew I need that kind of positioning and this is why I had already started my own EZ Marketing show, where I brought more successful experts who would elevate my status by purely being on the same screen with me. (Weirdly that does work.)
But it wasn’t enough. So from mid-2018, I started focusing on PUBLICITY. I started writing for Medium, Thrive Global, Elephant Journal. I was approached to share some articles for Funnel Magazine. Then I applied to be a contributor in Business2Success, Addicted2Success and soon after, I was amazed at getting accepted as a contributor to Influencive!
It was not instant, but also took longer as I was in my own way.
A lot.
Here are my limiting beliefs at the time:
LIMITING BELIEF # 1:
I thought I did not have what it takes to be published in any press. (Even though I have been blogging and sharing my expertise in various areas from 2007. Writing for my own blog felt safe. Being chosen to be published anywhere else seemed like a privilege I did not deserve.)
What a horrible lie to be telling yourself. The media is so hungry for new content. And new does not mean NEWS. It means a unique point of view. Unique means that it is PERSONAL. So many media publications are desperate to share your personal point of view. WHY?
BECAUSE WE CONNECT THROUGH STORIES! Our brain learns and develops deep relationships with a person or the source of STORIES. This is why we love watching movies so much, or why we love to read novels and poetry. Stories are what keeps people stuck watching telly every day. This is why some soap operas run for half a century.
And that is an excellent example of stories that are not groundbreaking, not nEWS, not anything special at all. But they are stories of a person.
YOU have a story. WE want that story. Could you share it? That’s all that you need to embrace to see publicity as a tool. Not as something for the chosen ones.
LIMITING BELIEF # 2:
I have not made enough money yet to be a “celebrity” in my niche. When I have something to show, only then I deserve to be heard.
NONSENSE. You do not need a 7-figure business. You do not even need to have a business at all if you want to use publicity for your visibility because everyone has a story to share. A story that may influence just one person. If you improve just one person’s life — wouldn’t that be amazing? What about ten people? What about a million?
START with visibility.
START WITH PUBLICITY.
This is how you can get your message heard and this is how you can attract clients who will be perfect for your business, wherever you are in it. You do not HAVE to talk about your earnings, or HOW you grew your business. Choose media outlets, podcasts, online publications that want stories of transformations or simply personal reflections on a subject — you can talk pretty much about anything you want and get massive publicity if you know how to.
Here is what you need to embrace right now to help your business soar with publicity:
- Getting out of your own way.
- Learning how to craft your media story.
- Learning the best way to approach online publications to get published.
- Learning how to pitch to top podcasts.
- Learning how to leverage publicity to attract more and BETTER clients.
Money loves status. Money loves celebrity.
“Money flows to status and celebrity.” (I love this saying I heard from one of my mentors, Ron Reich)
And it is up to you if you want to hide and “hope to be found out” Good luck with that, as it does not work in the real world.
OR you can choose to transform your life today!
This is what helped me build the brand and the status I have today. This is what doubled my business in less than 12 months. This is what opened the world of new opportunities, better quality clients and even more confidence to show up and stand out like I do!
