You can’t always guess how popular a post is going to be. I’ve written some posts that I thought for sure were going to be duds and they turned out to be pretty popular. Then again, I’ve written posts that I thought were going to put me in the Blogging Hall of Fame. I could even hear my readers chanting my name…
“D-an!”
“D-an!” Only they turned out to be so-so.
If there isn’t a special formula or secret recipe, what can you do to help ensure a blog post will be successful?
Develop Great Content
Pick a topic that interests you.
There are millions of writers out there writing content. Strive to be the one-in-a-million that creates great content. Have faith in yourself and in your subject.
Believing is achieving.
Write like You Were in School
Do you remember those essays you had to write in your high school English class? Do you remember the structure that you had to follow? First, was the introduction, then the body, and last is the conclusion.
I guess our writing instructors weren’t wrong after all; structure your blog the same way.
- Your intro – Tell ‘em what you are going to tell ‘em.
- Your body – Tell ‘em.
- Your conclusion – Tell ‘em what you told ‘em.
Do Not Write Lengthy Paragraphs
With all of the distractions online pulling us this way and that, we have become a world of skimmers.
- When possible, use bullet points
- Short paragraphs
- Save the long paragraphs for your doctorial thesis
Use the Ever Not so Popular H1 and H2 Tags
Using H1, H2, and H3 tags (header tags) will increase your chances of being found by the search engines. The header tags tell the search engine what your site is about, and that’s a good thing.
- Use H1 tags for your post title. Use one H1 tag to a web page or post.
- Use H2 tags for your main points. OK to use multiple H2 tags.
- Use H3 tags for your sub points. OK to use multiple H3 tags.
- H4 – H6 tags don’t really matter in SEO. Use them at your discretion.
Add Links to Your Older Articles
Increase your reader’s engagement by including links to your older articles. Do you have a relevant link that your reader might find interesting? Then add that link in your new piece. This will keep your reader engaged and on your site.
Call to Action
Every post should conclude with a Call To Action (CTA) for your reader. Use your CTA to ask your readers to sign up for your email list, check out another link within your site, leave a comment or to follow you on your social media sites.
Think of it as the ol’ “Do you want fries with that?” question.
You can’t always tell how successful a blog post is going to be, but there are a few things the writer can do to improve their chances of writing a successful post. Create great content, but keep the format simple and easy to read. Use header tags to increase your chances of being found by the search engines and leave a CTA for your readers. By using some of these easy tips, you just might find your next post in the Blogging Hall of Fame.
