How to Add a Tweet-it Button
SEO is heavily-driven by quality links from websites in your niche. Nope, that’s so early 2012. Links still matter, but social media shares have also begun to play a strong role in your website’s ranking. And why not? Nielson research found that in 2012, 92% of consumers trust recommendations from friends and family more than any form of advertising. That’s an 18% increase from 2007. Social media conversations have become a driving force in purchase decisions, so it’s a factor search engines can no longer ignore. Google and other major search engines actually crawl the content generated by each of Facebook’s 1 billion users and the 340 million Tweets published each day.
One of the easiest ways to generate social media shares is to make it really easy for your blog readers to Tweet your content. You can even embed “Tweet it” buttons directly in your blog content so it’s just a matter of one-click sharing. It’s a question we commonly hear at Inbound Agent after we publish one of our Tweetable Stats posts: “How DO you add that tweet-it button in your blog content?” Well, you’re in luck because I’m about to outline a super-easy, step-by-step process for unleashing one-click sharing on your blog:
Step 1: Head Over to Twitter
Twitter has made it easy for people who can’t code by offering a free, super-easy center for generating code to embed the tweet-it button in your blog content. The link is found here, but I’ll still walk you through how I use it.
Step 2: Select “Share a Link”
Out of the four listed options, you’ll want to select “share a link,” which was located to the far left at the time of writing.

Step 3: Use the Default Share URL
You don’t need to worry about telling Twitter where to direct social media users. They’ll take care of it for you. Simply select the default option under the first option “Share URL” of “use this page URL.” The other option, where you’re allowed to paste in a link, is a great choice if you’re promoting an eBook or another landing page through relevant text in your content.
Step 4: Add Your Text
The next option in the Twitter button resource center is whether you’d prefer to have the page title listed in the Tweet or the quotation or statistic you’re encouraging users to share. Select the second option and enter your text, ensuring it’s nice and short so readers don’t have to edit anything.
Step 5: Count or Don’t
It’s entirely up to you whether or not you wish to allow the Tweet it button to display a running count of Tweets in real-time in your content. We’ve used both options on the Inbound Marketing Agents blog. Choose your own adventure by checking the box or leaving it as-is.
Step 6: Cite Your Sources
Are you encouraging your blog readers to Tweet a famous quotation or a fresh statistic? Great. Just be sure and cite your source by adding the appropriate Twitter handle of the source under the “via” option. If you’re asking for shares of your own brilliance, you can just leave it to default to the Twitter account you’re currently signed in to or add your company’s handle:

Step 7: Preview and Retrieve Your Code
On the right side of the page, click the “Tweet” button to ensure your social sharing looks like you intended. Copy and paste the code and head back over to your blogging portal.
Step 8: Add the HTML
Depending on which blogging platform you’re using, you’ll need to either open an HTML window or switch to HTML view. In the example here, I’m using the HubSpot module for illustration purposes. Copy and paste in the code at the appropriate spot in the text, click update and you’re all done.
Step 9: Success
If all has gone well, you should be proudly looking at the following button in your blog content:
